Upholsterer

As an upholsterer, you will pad and cover furniture such as chairs, bedheads and sofas. Your job may involve either or both of the following:

  • Factory work, upholstering complete items or particular parts like chair or sofa arms
  • Craft work on individual pieces of new furniture or renovation or re-upholstery of old or antique furniture

Your work may be physically demanding, involving lifting and carrying furniture. You may not find this work suitable if you have certain allergies.

Day-to-Day Tasks:

  • Building furniture up with loose fibre stuffing, cotton, felt, and/or foam padding to form smooth rounded surfaces
  • Drawing cutting lines on material following patterns, template, sketches, or blueprints, using chalk, pencils, paint, or other methods
  • Examining furniture frames, upholstery, springs, and webbing to locate defects·Fitting, installing, and securing material on frames, using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, and/or staples
  • Making, restoring, and/or creating custom upholstered furniture, using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods
  • Reading work orders, and apply knowledge and experience with materials in order to determine types and amounts of materials required to cover workpieces
  • Sewing rips or tears in material, or creating tufting, using needles and thread
  • Preparing patterns and templates
  • Cutting out fabric
  • Fixing webbing and springs
  • Covering frames with padding and fabric using stitching, staples, tacks or glue
  • Adding trimmings such as piping, fringing and buttons
  • You could also re-upholster furniture, which would involve removing old upholstery and repairing the frame before re-upholstery
  • Understanding Health & Safety requirements
  • Assisting in updating Risk Assessments - notifying management of hazards / risks
  • Keeping work area clean and tidy

We are looking for Upholsterers with all experiences, from Junior to high level, as there is full on-site training with all aspects of our manufacture. A MINIMUM OF 6 MONTHS INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
