Employment Status: Full-Time, Permanent
Who are you?
You are a smart and talented individual who knows how to work hard whilst still maintaining a fun and friendly attitude. You enjoy working within a team where there is a culture of learning and mutual respect. An environment where you can bring new ideas to the table and have them heard.
You are a good communicator and enjoy speaking to people at all levels. Be that via email, on the phone or simply having a chat about your ideas over a cup of tea and a biscuit.
You have worked hard during your time at university and are proud of the excellent grades that you have achieved (on course for a 2:1 or above). Now you want to put your academic skills into practice in a real world context. You do not want to be pigeon holed as a placement student and be given menial tasks. You want to make a direct contribution to the team and be part of major real life projects.
You have a real passion for technology, programming and software development, but you do not want to just be a code-cutter working from a specification. You want to be a part of the whole software development lifecycle making positive contributions to the project you are working on at all levels.
On a technical level you yearn to work with cutting edge technologies. You have an excellent understanding of database design techniques and SQL statements. You also have experience in web based user interface creation (HTML, CSS, Ajax, XML) and a good working knowledge of Java. To reinforce your experience here you would like to showcase some of your work you are most proud of to us (this could be from your academic studies or other work experience).
You are a creative problem solver who is quick to pick things up and are keen to learn new skills. You want to get the most experience from a placement year as possible. Ideally you would like the equivalent CV of someone who has been working in the industry for two years by the time you finish your placement. You would also like to be able to return to university and tell your tutors how things really work in industry nowadays!
You don’t just want to have a "job" for your placement year. You want to be part of a team who socialise together and are friends rather than simply colleagues.
Who are we?
We are the fourth largest telecommunications company in the UK. In ten years we have grown to over 900 staff with offices situated in Newbury, London, Manchester, Glasgow and Eastern Europe. We are very proud of the fact that we now carry 14% of the UK’s telephone calls and have an impressive turnover of £ 213.5 million. Our clients have included major broadband providers such as AOL and Tiscali and all the major mobile operators (Orange, Vodafone, 3, O2). We will stop name dropping now. We are also proud of the fact that we have secured a place in the Sunday Times top 100 companies to work for four years in a row.
Our software development team are based in Newbury and have many years experience of working with and nurturing placement students. Our goal is to turn the brightest talent into the very best professionals in the business. It is not completely unselfish though. We also use our placement programme as a way of seeking out people who we want to work with and we often offer students who do really well a full time job upon completion of their degree.
