UK Finance Director - Logistics & Storage Sector

The Business

Working in close partnership with Seymour John, my client is a global $3.1bn turnover cold storage logistics platform formed in 2013, focused on providing integrated cold chain solutions to customers across 10 countries. Now with a presence in the U.S., Europe and South America, my client seeks to invest in modern assets that possess industry-leading technologies, offer value-added services and support key international trade flows. The business is backed by a US head quartered private equity fund with $80bn of assets under management.

Since inception in 2013 there have been 6 acquisitions/investments into the Netherlands, 5 into the USA, 5 into Spain/Portugal combined, 2 into Chile, 2 into Northern & Republic of Ireland combined, and 1 each into Austria, Brazil, Poland, Australia and mainland UK. The majority of growth has come through acquisitions, interspersed with greenfield investments into new storage and logistics facilities.

The current Whitchurch business was purchased in December 2017 and today has a turnover of £38m. It was established in 1981 and with a "can do" approach to business has developed a reputation for delivering excellent customer service offering a one stop shop with solutions encompassing Cold and Multi-Temperature Storage, Logistics Services and other Valued Added Services such as blast freezing, cheese cutting, repacking and bagging. Customers include Cargill, Arla, Avara, Muller, Mondelez and Roberts Bakeries. There is a BIG appetite to grow their UK presence and we are keen to secure a candidate capable of managing change, along with greater scale and complexity in the future.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the VP Finance Europe with a strong dotted line into the Whitchurch based General Manager (MD) key priorities for the role include:

  • Advising on the winning and implementation of new customer business to ensure EBITDA growth, working closely with the Head of Commercial.
  • Support to business expansion activities such as Mergers & Acquisitions or Investment in new sites in mainland UK.
  • Profit improvement activities such as operational and overhead cost-efficiencies and taking a customer profitability view to identify ways to optimise margin.
  • Leading transformation projects such as the integration and/or implementation of new systems, processes and controls, helping to drive greater business manageability and valuation.
  • Develop your direct reports and continue to encourage a culture of learning and growth within your team and the wider business. (Reports include a highly capable Financial Controller and FP&A Manager). This will be essential for the continued success of the finance team as the business scales up.

The business has a focused, down to earth culture. You can achieve a lot more by forming great working relationships than you can by aggressively forcing issues.

The ideal candidate must already have a strong background with the Storage and Logistics sector and operated at Finance Director level already due to the expected level of growth and challenge.
