St Cuthbert’s Society Junior Common Room (1168134) is an independent educational charity serving the student community of St Cuthbert’s Society, one of the constituent colleges of Durham University.
The charity is the cornerstone of the student experience for the 1,400+ students at the college.
It acts as the representative body for the students’ interests and facilities a rich and expansive programme of sporting, cultural, recreational and academic societies. The charity also provides welfare support to students, organises major social events and is involved in outreach activities in the North-East.
The charity was incorporated as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2016 and is administered by a Board of Trustees. The charity currently has a turnover of approximately £200,000 a year and is managed on a day-to-day basis by a combination of full time and volunteer staff.
What we are looking for
We are looking for trustees to help lead the charity through its formative transition stage from new charity to established charity and to support the development of a long-term strategy to enable St Cuthbert’s JCR to become the best run charity of its kind in the UK.
More generally, trustees have overall responsibility for the charity complying with the law, being financially prudent and effective in meeting its charitable objectives.
Strong candidates will be able to demonstrate relevant experience, skills and expertise that can contribute towards both these purposes.
It is expected candidates will share our commitment to building a flourishing university college community.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, both alumni and non-alumni.
We are also currently particularly keen to receive applications from those with legal expertise and/or experience in student welfare / safeguarding or similar.
The board holds four full meetings a year. Video-conferencing options are available for these.
Trustees normally sit on an additional sub-committee which may hold 3-5 further calls / meetings a year as required. These are scheduled to coincide with full board meetings whenever possible.
All trustee positions in the UK are nonremunerated. Reasonable travel expenses are covered.
