The Transmission System Planning & Investment team is a critical function within the SHE Transmission business. It has the specialist technical capability and experience to undertake the system studies and designs required to plan the current and future Transmission network, and ensures that safety, security of supply and performance of the network is maintained in accordance with required planning standards, Grid Code, SQSS and other licence obligations.
The Transmission System Planning and Investment Managers are responsible for three main areas, and assignments will be determined by capability, experience and development objectives, with the potential to rotate managers between roles to build capability and enable succession planning.
Whole System Performance is responsible for ensuring compliance of the £3.3billion SHE Transmission assets with transmission planning standards, high integrity power systems analysis, operational and commissioning support and a number of reporting and regulatory requirements.
Network Planning is responsible for defining network development plans (c.£2-3billion in each price control) with the GB network System Operator and other Transmission Owners, and translating this into SHE Transmission investment plans.
Regional Investment roles will be based upon the network planning activities across the SHE Transmission network, and how these can be most efficiently and effectively delivered. Each role has a portfolio of c.£500million - £1.5billion. These roles are each responsible for the full range, from connections to strategic reinforcements, of investment business cases and design requirements.
Your Skills and Experience
You'll have a degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution. You'll also have demonstrable experience in Network Planning, ideally in the GB Electricity Transmission sector, with good knowledge of relevant industry and technical standards, and how these evolve. You should have a good understanding of the industry structure, including interfaces with the Regulator, System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Networks. You'll also have a good understanding of the commercial mechanisms for investments, including statutory processes, and the Licence Obligations under which SHE Transmission operates.
You'll have the ability to direct a highly technical team, ensuring priorities are clear, and facilitating development of team capability to maintain and develop SHE Transmission's strong System Planning function. You'll be able to lead innovation, both technical and commercial, to develop SHE Transmission's business planning approach, while ensuring Network Reliability is maintained, and customer value is clear.
You should possess strong communication skills and feel comfortable communicating at all levels with the ability to present on a range of technical subjects with the ability to form structured arguments with reasoned justification to influence and guide others. You should possess the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications, with a focus on concise information for senior management. This role requires that you are organised and methodical with the ability to prioritise your and your team's workload against demanding targets and deadlines.
