Reed have recently launched our fantastic new apprenticeship where you can train to become a qualified Recruitment Consultant.
It doesn’t matter what background you come from or what qualifications you hold as it is all about the individual and the skills they possess, some of Reed’s most successful consultants have come from many diverse backgrounds.
Some of the qualities and skills we look for are:
Motivated – Motivation is infectious, if you are not motivated how can you motivate candidates to be ready for interview?
Confident – As you are the middleman between clients and candidates you must be confident to take control of conversations and advise people on their decisions
Inquisitive – People who are naturally inquisitive do well in recruitment as they are not afraid to ask questions to undercover information or follow up potential prospects
Reliable – If you want to be perceived as a trustworthy professional you need to be reliable, you must be able to provide the services you promised within the agreed timeframes in order to be credible
Resilient – You will receive knockbacks in the role so you need to be able to learn from them, pick yourself up and carry on
Tenacious – On average it takes between the fifth and twelfth contact to win business from clients, you need to be able to keep up the momentum and keep trying
Hardworking – Recruiters work hard for their money, you may have to work late to meet a candidate or source CVs as you have been out all day meeting clients
Communication – You will be communicating with clients at all levels along with candidates from all over the world so you must be able to adapt your style
Personable – People really do buy from people, you have the bonus of having a large brand name behind you but in order to be successful you will need to be charismatic and personable; also in order to be successful you must be able to build long lasting relationships
Target driven – You will be set achievable targets including an overall financial target, you must be motivated to manage and achieve this
Multi-tasking – You will be managing several different workloads with many different clients alongside managing your targets and a portfolio of candidates
Time management – For the above reason you will need to possess excellent time managing skills to order to meet different deadlines
On top of these qualities I personally look for someone with longevity on your CV, it takes time to learn the job and build up your reputation in the marketplace. For that reason I am not looking for someone who is only interested in the short term. This is a career not just another job. It's also highly desirable if you are driver with your own vehicle, also happy to consider applicants learning / willing to learn to drive.
