Trainee Pathology Laboratory Services Technician

The main roles of this position are to perform routine Necropsy, Histology, technical Fetal Pathology and Sperm Analysis procedures to the required quality and quantity thresholds, ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and other legal requirements. Company Standards will be established and the individual will provide assistance in procedures as requested.


In line with business needs in all areas of Pathology Laboratory Services, the Technician will develop the skills and knowledge required to be a multi-skilled individual providing support and technical expertise to the required quality and quantity thresholds.


  • Will develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to fully contribute to the resource requirements of all areas and departments within Pathology Laboratory Services.
  • Necropsy:
    • Performs routine macroscopic necropsy techniques for all species.
    • Trim and retain all organs from all species.
    • Performs caesarean necropsy techniques.
    • Performs external and visceral fetal examinations.
    • Uses on-line data capture system.
    • Performs non-routine tasks such as freezing tissues.
  • Sperm Analysis
    • Preparation of consumables e.g. slides washing, pot filling.
    • Sample preparation for routine sperm analyses.
    • Staining and coverslipping of slides.
    • Accurate, clear, correct completion of associated documentation.
  • Fetal Pathology
    • Preparation of reagents and sample processing for skeletal examinations.
    • Prepare Bouins fixed rat/mouse fetuses and rabbit head serial sections using a freehand serial sectioning technique.
    • Specimen archiving.
  • Histology
    • Receipt of tissues and preparation of work packages e.g.
      cassettes, bags, labels etc.
    • Tissue storage and retrieval systems.
    • Dissection of tissues (multiple species).
    • Decalcification of bone tissues.
  • Processing and embedding of tissues.
  • Processor operation and routine maintenance.
  • Sectioning of tissues and mounting onto glass slides.
  • Staining and coverslipping of slides.
  • Quality inspection of slides.
  • Repeat work procedures.
  • Final block, slide and paperwork checks and packaging and
    dispatch of materials.
  • Transfer, withdrawal and return of archived items.
  • Additional specialised techniques e.g. frozen sectioning.
  • Accurate, clear, correct completion of associated documentation.
  • Maintains a good standard of housekeeping in the Laboratory.
  • Under guidance, will comply with Health and Safety and GLP legislation and guidelines.
  • Reads and complies with SOPs and Policies & Procedures related to the work they are conducting and the position that they hold.
  • Takes ownership of their Personal Training Record.
  • Undertakes other tasks at the request and under the direction of local managers.

Checks work of peers and other technicians and if appropriate may assist with training of other members of the group.


No direct management responsibilities, but understands the roles of others and can liaise, collaborate and demonstrate effective communication

Customer Facing:

  • Develops a good working relationship with team members and Senior Staff within the department.

Demonstrates flexibility and positive co-operation to meet business requirements through learning new techniques or cross-training within the division.

Desired Skills and Experience

5 GCSE level or equivalent passes including English, Science and Maths (level C or above) Manual dexterity and good communication skills.

Previous experience would be an advantage.
