The Technology Communications and Engagement Manager is accountable for setting and delivering the communication and engagement strategy, brand & services for Royal Mail’s Technology function. You will be the go-to person for the CIO, CTO and the Technology leadership team in all aspects of internal, external and partner organisation collaboration and communication, driving the evolution towards a customer focused fast paced agile delivery function.
As the pace of delivery increases and our network of supplier partners grows and strengthens, the role is critical to ensuring that all parties work to a consistent strategy and brand and that messaging and actions are aligned to this.
•Develop an effective working relationship with the Technology leadership team (TLT) to develop and agree the communications and engagement strategy & services for Technology that aligns to wider strategy of the function, owning the Technology brand, brand persona and its evolution towards a customer focused fast paced agile delivery function
•Own the internal communications & collaboration channel and channel effectiveness. This will include piloting new initiatives before they are rolled out across the business and bringing new ideas based on industry best practice for similar organisations
•Develop and author creative and journalistic content to ‘tell our story’ to our people, partners and stakeholders internally and externally
•Own the Technology brand and work with group communications to maintain alignment with the corporate brand
•Engage senior stakeholders across the business to gain insight into our transformation activities and source/research the content to help communicate the change with passion
•Own the external communications channel for RMG Technology, build and promote the Royal Mail Group (RMG) Technology brand externally, including representation on relevant online platforms and at related industry forums to build our public profile and attract new talent into the organisation
•Develop a process to measure the effectiveness of Technology communications (including output from the Employee Opinion Survey), capturing lessons learnt and driving changes and improvements as required;
•Provide assurance that the right communications are going to the right people, at the right time in the right way;
•Develop, maintain & utilise an appropriate communication & collaboration infrastructure and channels for the function and review their effectiveness so they meet the function’s needs. This will include managing the content, format and logistics for the Technology town halls and other related Technology wide events, ensuring that speakers and presenters are briefed and prepared in readiness.
This role does not have any direct reports, but will manage a virtual team selected from across the Technology organisation to deliver specific components of the communications and engagement plan. It is anticipated that these roles will be identified and appropriate time ring-fenced at the point of agreeing the overall strategy.
•Track record of developing and deploying a communications and engagement strategy & services in an organisation comparable to RMG Technology;
•Experience in effective use of social media and relevant digital platforms to build brand and engagement;
•Excellent influencing skills, including ability to influence a wide range of different stakeholders such as technical experts and business subject matter experts up to CXO level;
•Ability to distil technical information into business language that can be understood by a broad non-technical audience;
•Strong relationship building skills;
•Excellent business knowledge and awareness, involving a good understanding of the workings of RMG and how Technology supports the deployment of the business strategy;
•Resilience, flexibility and stamina to work in a pressured and changing environment;
•Comfortable with ambiguity and changing requirements;
•Excellent written and verbal skills, with a proven track record in engagement, internal and external communications;
•Self motivated and able to work in a matrix environment
•Willing to get hands-on and create journalistic and digital content, including activities such as research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features and articles as well as the creation of associated creative digital asset.
•Able to provide a demonstrable portfolio of public facing technology related communications
•Strong communications background working in a Technology function with deep understanding of Technology principles/terminology in order to act in the capacity of a Technology Evangelist / Brand Ambassador.
•An industry-recognised qualification in journalism or corporate communications (highly desirable)
•Degree or equivalent
