IRS Ltd is the leading provider of Radiation Protection Advisory (RPA) services in the UK, delivering RPA and Medical Physics Expert (MPE) support to multiple NHS Trusts and private hospitals, as well as veterinary and dental practices and security equipment users. The Technical Officer role is a permanent position based at IRS’s Lichfield office, with excellent road and rail links (only a few minutes’ walk from Lichfield Trent Valley Station and close to the A38 and M6 Toll). The role offers fantastic opportunities, job security, training and development to the ideal candidate. At our Lichfield office you will be joining a team of 2 other technical officers.

The Role

Working as part of the Survey Team, you will be responsible for performing radiation safety surveys on medical and x-ray generating equipment at various sites located across the whole of the UK. Meeting and interacting with different customers on a daily basis, this varied and exciting role will provide you with fantastic career opportunities. IRS has a customer base spanning much of the UK and regular travelling is required, including extended working days and overnight stayovers as part of the role. Overnight accommodation and meal expenses are provided and Time off in Lieu (TOIL) may be claimed for additional hours worked. Reporting to the Scientific and Technical Management Group, you will be taken through a comprehensive, hands-on training programme to ensure your proficiency as soon as possible.


A full driving license is essential because of the travel involved. Company vehicles are provided for travel. Given the nature of the role, and the travel involved, the ideal candidate must have a flexible approach to work as short notice site visits may be required including visits requiring overnight stayovers and working extended hours.

The ideal candidate will have a general interest in Science. A-levels and GCSE’s (or equivalent) in a scientific subject are desirable.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary £16,000 - 18,000 pro rata, depending on qualifications and experience.

Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, (earlier starts and later finishes are sometimes required).
