Technical Manager Laboratories and Facilities (Queens' Building)
Job number: SUPP103934
Division/School: Faculty of Engineering
Contract type: Open ended contract staff
Working pattern: Full time
Salary: £42,418 to £47,722 per annum
Are you an enthusiastic and dynamic Technical Manager looking to lead an excellent team in a challenging, varied and expanding cutting-edge environment?
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol is looking for an inspiring leader with a strong engineering or science background to take on a varied, demanding and extremely rewarding role to help develop the engineers of the future.
Using your background in either Civil, Aerospace, Mechanical engineering or similar disciplines or industries, you will manage, lead and recruit technical staff to support research laboratories and activities. You will plan, define and then drive expansion of your team’s activities.
The School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (CAME) is predominantly located in Queen’s Building. The site has a varied range of technical laboratories to support these academic disciplines (e.g. heavy structural testing, high-voltage systems, through to wind tunnels, nano-engineering, and composite material manufacture and preparation).
It is essential you can manage a highly skilled team, some qualified to post-doctoral level, and organise work and activities to enable service delivery across different disciplines. Part of the role will see you interfacing with researchers and other university support services to help them to formulate and affect practicable solutions to complex problems, using your staff and facilities.
You will be a good communicator who can multitask and develop relationships quickly, make good decisions and take actions across specialisms outside of your own. Ideally you will have a background of managing specialist laboratories and associated staff (other equivalent experience is welcome too). The following would be advantageous: experience of successfully managing and planning in a research and development environment (e.g. budgets, scheduling and requirements capture), and a background in operational management of diverse technical teams and facilities (e.g. laboratories, hydraulic supply mains, compressed air systems, or similar).
The University offers excellent employee benefits, including a generous annual leave entitlement, pension schemes and opportunities for staff development and flexible working.
