Speech and Language Therapist
  • Location: Carchalton/ Kingston/ Merton
  • Job Type: 0.8 till he end of the academic year
  • Salary: £36,571 - £44,145 per annum

We are seeking a dedicated Speech and Language Therapist to join our High Needs department. This role involves working closely with therapy colleagues and education staff to support students aged 16-25 with learning and communication difficulties, including Learning Disabilities, Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g., Dyslexia, Specific Language Impairment), or Autism. The successful candidate will help students achieve their academic, social, and employment potential.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Conduct holistic Speech and Language therapy assessments and person-centred interventions to support learners in accessing and developing functional skills across the curriculum.
  • Understand and address the impact of communication difficulties on a person’s function and behaviour.
  • Enable teaching and support staff to deliver the curriculum at an appropriate language and communication level through support plans, staff training, and class observations.
  • Work collaboratively with learners’ families, carers, and specialist health and social care teams to ensure comprehensive support.
  • Plan and implement Speech and Language therapy and/or multi-disciplinary group work, such as Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) and zones of regulation.
  • Assess and intervene in learners’ communication, social, and interaction needs, devising plans to manage these effectively within various environments.
  • Support students in developing everyday functional communication, social, and interaction skills with interventions that are person-centred and culturally sensitive.
  • Implement transition plans for students entering and leaving the College, ensuring these are appropriate and effective.
  • Contribute to Educational Health Care Plans (EHCP) reviews/network meetings with feedback on learners’ progress and future goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or related field.
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council.
  • Experience working with young adults with learning and communication difficulties.
  • Strong understanding of the principles outlined in Valuing People (DOH 2002) and Valuing People Now.
  • Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in using alternative communication tools like Makaton.
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
