Specialist Occupational Therapist for Paediatrics

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paediatrics Specialist Occupational Therapist University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).


Southampton Children’s Hospital is one of 10 largest children’s hospitals within the UK and located within University Hospital Southampton which is a large regional teaching hospital with links to the university and Wellcome Trust research facility.

The UHS Therapy services department runs a 7 day service, using a rota system so weekend working will be expected.


Although static within paediatrics the role will be rotational to enable experience within all the key areas within the children’s hospital, treating patients from birth to 16 years within a variety of high care, ward, clinic and outpatient settings. The key focus within rotations are firstly within the speciality of neurology/ neurosurgery/ neurorehabilitation and neurodevelopmental. Southampton Children’s Hospital is a UKROC accredited level 2 a centre for neurorehabilitation which has been labelled an “exemplar” service from the 2019 Major trauma peer review. We are a designated major trauma centre, neurosurgical centre ,tertiary neurology centre, tertiary oncology centre, tertiary neuro-muscular centre, and have a level 3 PICU and neonatal unit . The post holder would also get experience within Bursledon House where children receive a holistic approach to meet their physical and mental health needs.

Secondly it will be involved within the regional speciality of paediatric orthopaedics including trauma, elective, and multilevel surgery, being an integral team member helping with the child’s pathway including pre admission assessments and equipment organisation, This would involve intensive early rehabilitation, discharge planning, goal setting and collection of objective measures.

You will be supported by specialist Band 7 Paediatric Occupational Therapists both within physical and mental health and Physiotherapists allowing excellent opportunity for further developing clinical and theoretical skills. You will work in a dynamic and forward thinking Therapy team participating in regular audits and teaching.

You will be expected to work within our team philosophy, which is “We strongly believe in team working in a happy working environment. You should be an experienced Band 5, or equivilent. Previous paediatric experience is an essential criteria the applicant must be keen, enthusiastic and have a definite desire to work within paediatrics.

The successful post holder will become an integral part of our 40 strong combined Paediatric Occupational and Physiotherapy Therapy team and wider Therapy services department of over 240wte staff.
