Quality assurance and test engineering is a vital part of the development lifecycle which ensures that our customers experience the best possible quality when interacting with us. This could be through using a bug-free, well designed piece of software, using web services that are fast and reliable, or through knowing that personal information will be kept secure and private. These things are important to the large institutions that we sell to, all the way through to individual symbol users.

The purpose of this role is to ensure the quality and data security of released software by developing and implementing effective and efficient software testing strategies as part of a productive and engaged QA team.

Role responsibilities:

Software quality assurance - Ensuring released software is of high quality:

  • Maintain 100% test coverage for our flagship products across manual and automatic testing
  • Develop appropriate test coverage for legacy products, bearing in mind that they are updated less often and are considered mature
  • Develop appropriate test coverage for products licensed from partners (most notably apps) to ensure that our levels of quality control are met
  • Development and maintenance of automated tests
  • Development and maintenance of BDD manual tests
  • Confidence testing bugfixes and large new features before they are merged into the main development branches
  • Processing and refining user and stakeholder bug reports into actionable issues
  • Where possible, improve the testing processes to cut down the time it takes to QA software
  • Adapt to unexpected or short notice requests to ensure that resulting product changes are of high quality and fulfil the criteria for success

Data security - Take a data-first approach to everything:

  • Specifically test our products, services and network configurations to make sure they do not expose personally identifiable information.
  • When new features in the software are proposed or being developed, be responsible for thinking about any data security issues that those features might pose.

Process and collaboration - Working as part of an efficient and evolving team:

  • Good issue tracking practice: raising detailed and complete issues, logging work and recording comments when necessary.
  • Help to keep the issue backlog and boards well organised and manageable.
  • Participate in triaging issues and bug fix discussions with the product development team.
  • Be actively involved in process review and retrospectives.
  • Clarify and investigate bug reports to ensure problems are thoroughly understood.
  • Research new ways of testing and validating software to make things run more smoothly and take less time.
  • Collaborate with the team to coordinate and schedule day-to-day test team activities.
  • Assist the product development team in investigating and isolating issues.

Required knowledge, skills, experience & personal attributes:

  • Understanding of C# and JavaScript to a level sufficient to write automated tests
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, particularly git and SVN
  • Familiarity with issue tracking tools and good issue tracking process
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows and software running under Microsoft Windows
  • Familiarity with Virtual Machine creation and management
  • Understanding of the processes and benefits of continuous integration
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to self-manage and time track
  • Ability to write technically and participate in technical discussions
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent English written communication skills
  • Ability to evolve and adapt to new processes and ways of working within the team
  • Pride in the quality of our products
