TITLE: Senior Research & Development Chemist
REPORTS TO: Research & Development Manager
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
To carry out assigned technical projects from the R & D programme, as directed by the
Research & Development Manager, involving the formulation and design of new products
and the reformulation of existing standard line products, so that the Company objectives
and customer requirements are met.
The job holder is one of several Research & Development Chemists in the R & D
Laboratory reporting to the Research & Development Manager. He/she is responsible for
progressing new product development and the defense of existing standard products.
Freedom to act is dependent upon experience as this varies within the department
To arrange internal trials of amended and new products with the Technical Service
Contact as required with Production Departments to arrange supervision of relevant
formulae either new products or reformulation of existing products relating to problem
The job holder may be required to have contact with Senior Management within the
Company from time to time, to Director level, while completing his/her responsibilities.
The job holder may be required to have contact with varying levels of non-company
personnel i.e. raw material suppliers, customer visits.
Other contact on a day to day basis may be associated with inter-departments on site for
gathering or exchanging information.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Receive assigned short, medium, and long term development objectives, identified from
the R & D programme, plan, co-ordinate and carry out their completion to agreed
timescales. Documenting all relevant results accurately.
b) Problem solve existing standard product line formulae, should this occur, where
Production/Quality Control/Technical Service, request R & D involvement.
c) Review regularly with the Research & Development Manager, providing progress reports
of all work assigned, appraising any follow up required, to gather and compile concisely,
all completed work into written reports.
d) Select and establish any new or alternative raw materials required, this would involve
where appropriate either face to face or telephone communication with raw material
suppliers or both. Also, to maintain an up to date knowledge of raw materials available,
in pursuing new product development.
e) Maintain, improve, engineer when required the defense of existing standard product
lines, utilising new or alternative raw materials available, by their substitution/evaluation.
f) To offer technical expertise/advice when required, in-house or at customer trials of new
or existing product lines.
g) To select and set Quality Control specifications for all new products, ensuring
manufactured quality is to performance required.
h) To be familiar and competent with all equipment required in the manufacture and
application of the Company product lines. Also, includes the use of computer database
and personal computer.
i) Maintain individually delegated assignments for e.g. cataloguing new raw materials,
update of raw material code list, health and safety and technical data library,
Each individual chemist would normally work on projects independently of other
Chemists within the Research and Development Department but from time to time it may
be appropriate for a more experienced Chemist to supervise a junior colleague for a
The job holder should ensure his/her working practices adhere to the Company policy
regarding the Health and Safety at Work Act. The job holder should also be familiar with
his/her responsibility under other safety/quality regulations.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The job holder will be qualified to varying levels, either undertaking or having completed
recognised technical qualifications, via day release or full time education. This would also
be linked to experience on a sliding scale through the working life of the job holder.
