Senior Product Manager - Hardware, IOT or Automation

Leading eCommerce technology business is going through a period of major growth and is now looking for a Senior Product Manager coming from an Automation, IOT or Machine Learning background.

This role will lead a group of Product Managers within the Asset Handling Automation department, working with the engineering teams and relevant stream stakeholders to define, realise and deliver great automation products. This role partners directly with Engineering Managers sharing accountability for key decisions, achieving commitments to the delivery plan and providing constructive challenges to focus effort on the missions that are important for the organisation.

Roles & Responsibilities


  • Partners with Engineering Managers and is the go-to person for a broad product area within Asset Handling Automation
  • Responsible for building, developing and managing a high performing team of Product Managers within the department, breaking down goals and delegating into clear plans
  • Actively ensures that the product vision is, and continues to be, fit for purpose
  • Role models behaviours and actively applies company principles daily
  • Product Knowledge
  • Provides product knowledge and a sound understanding of customer needs and capability requirements, signposting to technical knowledge where needed
  • Understands overall platform performance & how products support this including interdependencies with other systems
  • Monitors progress against goals, looking for ways to improve the product & make adjustments based on strategic goals

Insight & Innovation

  • Actively looks for opportunities in creating incremental value when achieving set product goal commitments
  • Develops a good understanding of trends, patterns and feedback to continuously refine the product roadmap with key stakeholders
  • Sets culture of pace and innovation, empowering teams to deliver fast to accelerate learning


  • Sets expectations within Technology for pace of delivery required to achieve goals
  • Maintains a backlog of planned work, linked to a goal, and its order of priority for delivery purposes at an appropriate level of granularity
  • Support Product Managers to scope & prioritise stories to maximise business value using products
  • Maintains teams focus on delivering value and a high quality product, balancing multiple requirements & schedules
  • Facilitates the agile processes and removes obstacles in workflow wherever required


  • Manages stakeholders effectively to gather feedback to continuously refine the product roadmap
  • Creates alignment between stakeholders, design, and engineering across multiple teams
  • Collaboration
  • Collaborates with PMs/EMs in planning sessions, challenging appropriately to meet product goals
  • Liaises with the stream Product function to share knowledge, define the realisation process and policies that govern it
  • Champions and facilitates collaboration between the Handling Robotics teams across multiple locations to ensure streamlined product delivery
  • Problem Solving
  • Recommends product improvements based on analysis drawn from data, systems and customer behaviour
  • Evangelises and embeds best practices in tracking, analysis, user experience design, and data-driven problem solving across multiple teams

Skills and Experience


  • Ability to lead and manage others effectively, coaching and giving feedback to support development
  • Previous experience building high performing product teams working alongside engineering to execute and deliver a vision successfully
  • Data-driven in decision making
  • Highly organised and able to plan, manage, track and deliver effectively
  • Assertive but diplomatic and have a bias for action, collaboration and optimism
  • Proactively solve problems, helping to make decisions and build recommendations by interpreting data and insight from multiple sources
  • Comfortable sorting out ambiguity and bring structure and clarity of purpose to a conversation
  • Communicate directly and clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, with a strong emphasis on active listening
  • You don't settle for good enough, you strive for great in every aspect of your work
  • Great track record of working with engineering and design teams so that people will always want to have you in their team
  • Strong technical skills and an analytical mind set
  • Ability to see the big picture, without losing sight of the product details
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written
  • Experience with managing products built by engineering teams
  • Knowledge of multiple functional areas, including product management, engineering, UX/UI, human factors, or regulatory compliance
  • Managing others effectively and supporting development
  • Proven ability to plan, mange, track and deliver on commitments
  • Ability to lead and direct your own and others work to achieve objectives
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Defining product roadmaps, building collaboratively with Engineering peers
  • Experience in the design and development of industrial automation or working with industrial control systems


  • Other relevant domain experience with automation, robotics, industrial internet of things (IIoT) or embedded systems
  • Previously worked as a product manager for physical products
  • Comfortable blending agile principles into waterfall programmes
  • Knowledge of multiple functional areas, including product management, engineering, UX/UI, human factors, or regulatory compliance
