Senior Policy Manager - Data and Infrastructure
£37,789 per annum
Full time and part time (minimum of 0.8 FTE will be considered)

ESRC is the UK’s leading research agency for the social sciences. The studies and research we fund are vital in enabling government, business, civil society and the public to learn about social and economic change and understand the reasons behind it.
About the role
The government has committed to boosting the UK’s spending on Research and Development to 2.4% of GDP by 2027 and efforts to meet this rise could see public and private investment in R&D increase by as much as £80 billion over the next 10 years. This represents a fantastic opportunity to support the UK’s world-leading community of researchers and to demonstrate the importance of a vibrant research base to the UK’s future prosperity. As a result the ESRC as part of UKRI is experiencing an unprecedented growth in the level of investment in excellent social science research. To support the changing nature of the organisation’s business and our expanding portfolio of activity, we are reviewing our staff complement to ensure the ESRC is well-placed to deliver our strategic mission.
A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Policy Manager based in the Data & Infrastructure team. The Data & Infrastructure team integrates skills, data infrastructure and resources and research methods within the ESRC to enable joined-up development and delivery of cutting edge social science. The currently advertised role sits within the Data & Infrastructure team, which leads on the development and implementation of strategy for data infrastructure and resources in the social sciences, as well as overseeing and managing many of the ESRC’s business critical and capital investments including the UK Data Service, Understanding Society, the ESRC Big Data Network and the Birth Cohort studies. The focus of the Data & Infrastructure team’s work is:
- maintaining world-class leadership in data science
- exploiting and maximising re-use of data
- informing data access and data policy.
You should have an understanding of the importance of data infrastructure, data resources and e-infrastructure to the social science (and wider) research landscape.
You will a significant experience in research, research management, research commissioning or related roles within the research and innovation sector.
It would be beneficial, but not essential, experience working with large-scale capital projects.
