Senior Design Engineer / Manager

Job Location: Poole, Dorset

Job Type: Permanent

Hours: Monday - Friday8.00am - 5.00pm with an earlier finish on a Friday 37.5 hours per week

We have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer / Manager to join a world leading manufacturing company based in Poole. Working within the Design Department, you will be form part of the Design Team working to not only oversee & manage the team but to be working in a hands on capacity undertaking product design, testing & verification and design engineering support activities.

Within this position we will be looking for you to:

  • Manage the technical and design activities of teams delivering new product designs, current design & VA/VE improvements
  • Ensuring highest standards of design quality and product performance are achieved with particular emphasis on accuracy and right-first-time for DfMA and quality in manufacture
  • Setting KPIs and targets for departmental work outputs and monitoring performance against these
  • Provide guidance and direction on workload prioritisation in order to achieve these time-driven targets
  • VA/VE, effectively liaising with cross-functional teams within the business to integrate this with Lean-CI activities and plans
  • Review and improve departmental engineering processes and procedures to ensure right-first-time design for product performance and manufacturability (DfMA), including development of the NPI process
  • Provide high quality production documentation to be issued to manufacturing
  • Collaborate closely with Production Engineering, Project Management and other company functional leaders
  • Manage the test and applications facility, maintaining high standards of testing and verification work and processes and ensuring correct specification and timely completion of workflow effectively through the area
  • Manage the Design teams’ budgets including proposals for departmental development and engineering equipment CapEx
  • Be the primary technical knowledge interface for working with our customers and suppliers on product opportunities, performance improvements and technical issues resolution
  • Act as the technical lead for the Company’s knowledge of engineering & design standards and requirements
  • Drive Design staff training & development, identifying current state-of-the-art design tools and recruiting engineering skills, so building the teams as required

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Strong experience in engineering management roles in fast-paced manufacturing environments
  • Engineering degree level qualification as a minimum, a further engineering management qualification an advantage
  • Experience in electrical / electromechanical / motion control systems would be ideal
  • Proficient in Solidworks, comfortable with using ERP systems, with electromechanical design software experience beneficial
  • Strong leadership skills with the proven ability to delegate motivate and develop teams
  • Project management experience, especially in relation to running and improving NPI projects and processes
  • Analytical and able to solve complex technical problems
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills and able to bring teams with them
  • Comfortable working with customers and a track record of successfully representing a company technically with third parties
  • Self-driven, results oriented and passionate about driving improvements and delivering in a time-driven environment
