This opportunity is offered on a six month fixed-term basis.

About the role

As part of the Admissions and Transport team, you will be responsible for assessing eligibility for travel assistance for children with SEND. You will have regular written and verbal communication with parents, schools (including Headteachers), other internal Surrey teams and other local authorities. You will provide advice and support to applicants on individual transport applications as well as provide advice on Surrey's transport policies. You will consider requests for solo routes and passenger assistants based on individual need and will prepare the written case for transport appeals and prepare safety of route referrals.

You will need to work with colleagues to ensure that applications are processed in accordance with published deadlines and that Surrey's statutory duties are met. You will have regard to transport legislation and guidance and Surrey's policies and processes relating to home to school transport.

You will ideally have practical experience of working within the service area of SEND and/or home to school transport and will have some understanding of legislation and guidance governing home to school transport. You will have experience of working effectively and flexibly as part of a team, whilst also having the ability to manage and prioritise a caseload and of working under pressure to meet a deadline.

You will have experience of handling difficult situations and have effective written and verbal communication skills that have been honed to deal with a diverse range of customers and partners. You will have the ability to identify process and service improvements and to work within a team to implement effective change, supporting others as necessary. You will also have the ability to make decisions to ensure effective use of budget and resources, negotiating and influencing successful outcomes to meet needs.

You will possess thorough IT skills, including Word and Excel and experience of using and updating database management systems and will be familiar with the principles of safeguarding and data protection.

About the team

This post is set within the Admissions and Transport team, which has responsibility for delivering the mainstream school admissions service - coordinating the normal round admissions process for all schools and managing the in-year admissions service; assessing mainstream and SEND home to school transport; arranging placement of challenging and vulnerable children under the Fair Access Protocol; tracking and monitoring applications up to the date children start school and identifying and referring children who might be missing education.

These are complex areas of work which are heavily regulated. The admissions process has statutory application and offer dates which must be met, creating a highly pressurised environment. Relevant statutory guidance issued by the Department for Education includes the School Admissions Code, Home to School Travel and Transport Guidance, the School Admissions Appeals Code and Children Missing Education.
