Our clients are now looking for Secondary English Teachers to work in Government Schools in Brunei.

We would now like to accept applications from teachers from the UK, South Africa, Australia, Canada and New Zealand as per the MoE’s requirements in Brunei.

Secondary English Teacher - (Qualfications: PGCE, BA Education is a must - ESL qualifications will not be accepted in place of a formal PGCE or BA Education), As a Secondary English Teacher, you will be working alongside local teachers within Secondary Government Schools teaching English to Bruneian school children aged 4 - 7 or 12 - 17.

Although these are English Teaching positions, the Ministry of Education will only accept candidates with one of the following Qualifications. Teachers need to meet the following requirements, which are NOT negotiable: All teachers applying will need to have the following.


To be eligible to apply you must have the following:

·Degree and Teaching Qualifications from a University in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or South Africa.

·For the Secondary Teaching posts, candidates must a Degree & PGCE (Secondary) in addition to an ESL Certificate.

oBrunei has a list of accredited universities and will only accept degrees from those universities.

oOnline / Distance / Correspondence Degrees and Teaching Qualifications will not be accepted for these positions.

·Qualified teacher status/teacher accreditation (PGCE, BEd, DipT etc.)

oTEFL/CELTA/ other ESL certificates alone or with a Degree are not accepted (regardless of teaching experience)

·Minimum 3 years relevant classroom teaching experience post PGCE qualification. All teachers must have current English teaching experience. The MoE will not accept candidates that have too many 'short term’ / 'temporary’ posts. They select teachers with proven long term contracts within schools.

·At least one year's recent EFL/ESL teaching experience for secondary and KS1 experience for primary

oThe MoE will not approve applications from teachers with extended career breaks unless it is for maternity leave or child care.

oTeachers on sabbatical/extended leave should not be out of the classroom for more than 6 months.

·All candidates must be under the age of 55 for MoE approval.

Additional Information

  • ·All teachers must have a current driving licence and must be willing to drive in Brunei or be able to rely upon someone in their household who can drive.

·Brunei operates a four term year, each of 10/11 weeks, with a 10 day or 2 week holiday between each term and then 4 or 5 weeks in December. The school year comprises a total of about 200 days.

·The weekend falls on a Friday and Sunday (Saturday is a work day)

·The Ministry of Education will not accept visa applications unless teachers meet the above requirements.

·The Average Salary is (BDN 3,500 - 5,0000 per month) approximately calculated at £24,000 - £36,000 yearly depending on currency exchange at the time of application, qualifications and experience. An additional one sixth of salary (i.e. four months) will be paid on completion of the two year contract.
