Your new School
This High School is an English medium, mixed 11 to 18 school situated in the Caerphilly Local Authority. The leadership team work well together and have a clear vision for the school that is communicated clearly to all team members. Pupils generally feel safe and happy in school and attendance rates are now higher than the average for similar schools. The school has a useful calendar of meetings to ensure that staff and leaders at various levels have to opportunity to meet regularly so that the school may offer development opportunities to all staff. Due to the absence of a permanent member of staff, the school are looking to recruit a new science technician into their well established department.
Your new role
Duties will include:
Preparing apparatus, solutions etc. for practical lessons (details of which will be provided in writing with at least two working days' notice)
Stock taking the chemicals, ordering more as required and ensuring that their storage complies with health and safety regulations.
The welfare of animal life in the biology lab.
Maintaining apparatus such as data loggers, pH meters etc.
Keeping up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development and passing on this information to colleagues.
Keeping the lab accident book up to date.
Putting out and clearing away apparatus at the start and end of lessons using the 15 minute changeover period.
Washing up dirty glassware.
Safe disposal of broken glassware and chemicals (halogenated solvent etc.)
Liaising with HOD with concerns, orders and problems.
What you'll need to succeed
As an applicant to this post, you will benefit from relevant previous experience and familiarity with the handling of chemicals and scientific equipment. A good understanding of laboratory safety and a scientific background or qualifications is essential. School science technicians are expected to be educated up to degree level or equivalent.
