Risk Specialist

Our client is looking for a Middle Office Risk Specialist. This role will see you working closely with our investment front and back office functions as well as the society's risk and compliance functions to provide appropriate over-sight, challenge and governance to the investment business unit.

Main responsibilities and key activities:

  • Design and implement financial risk management strategies, policies, processes, management information, monitoring, training and associated controls within the IRM framework to help provide assurance of effective operation
  • Constructively challenge, advise and support first line operational functions in identifying and assessing financial risks facing the business. Ensure these are captured and are being effectively monitored and controlled within the IRM framework
  • Design and implement the group's investment governance policies and documentation, including the Statements of Investment Principles (SIPs) for the society's with profits, unit linked and estate funds and the SIPs for the companies funds, ensuring that these are in line with the society's risk appetite framework
  • Monitor regulatory changes (including COBS and COLL rules) and ensure that the group's financial risk governance is up to date and adhered to by all relevant parties
  • Produce relevant ORSA and validation-related report content for the solvency and financial condition report, regular supervisory report and annual report and accounts as required
  • Work closely with other Risk Managers and control functions, both internally and externally, including active participation in meetings where appropriate to this role; E.g. co-ordination of the investment governance committee

Key skills and competency requirements:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of and ability to interpret regulations relevant to investments (including COBS and COLL rules) and financial risk management
  • Strong communication ability, including excellent written communication skills
  • Good understanding of processes and controls
  • Likely to be educated to degree level with relevant professional qualifications
  • Ability to challenge assessments of risks in a professional manner
  • Experience of life insurance, financial advice, unit trusts and retail banking
  • IMC/CFA/IRM qualifications (or equivalent)
  • Experience of investment fund management
  • Experience of designing and improving controls

Ideally you will be highly numerate, possess strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build relationships across all levels of seniority and prioritise your daily workload whilst working accurately under pressure.
