This is an exciting time for Surrey Libraries as we modernise and transform the service. A unique opportunity to join the Extended Leadership Team, you will lead Resources and Reader Development in delivering excellent quality stock and resources alongside developing reader development projects, events and initiatives to celebrate and promote a love of reading across Surrey.

Surrey Libraries hold a unique place in communities providing universal access to all with the potential to reach a wider audience through their programme of activities including reading, digital, learning, health and wellbeing, and culture. Across 52 locations, the library service offers an extensive and comprehensive book collection. We cater for all reading tastes and age groups providing multiple copies of the most popular titles to meet demand.

We are seeking an ambitious and dynamic leader to:

  • Successfully procure, manage and monitor spend of Libraries' stock and resources (physical and digital) budget across 52 Surrey Libraries ensuring value for money and service provision for reader development to meet the needs of diverse communities
  • Work closely with the Programme and Audience Development lead to develop, promote and deliver reader development activities, programmes, projects and initiatives e.g. National Libraries Week, Summer Reading Challenge, World Book Night, Black History Month etc. which engage with local communities and increase usage of library services across Surrey County Council
  • Support the ongoing modernisation, leadership and agreed strategic direction for Surrey Library Service, contributing to the successful implementation of the Libraries transformation programme
  • Manage a team of managers and support officers who will work closely with the operations and development teams, providing vision and direction to achieving the service strategy. You will be responsible for overseeing the stock contracts and ensuring the distribution, processing and circulation of stock to libraries in a timely manner to meet customer needs and expectations. 

To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:

  • Degree and/or relevant professional qualification and experience, or considerable experience of working within the service area
  • A proven ability to lead strategically and to inspire and motivate action in others
  • Experience and understanding of working at a senior management level in a public sector environment
  • Extensive knowledge of the provision of a library service
  • Experience of book selection in a library or bookshop environment
  • Extensive knowledge of budget management
  • Knowledge and experience of developing reader development activities, promotions and events.
