About the Role
Ruth House forms an essential part Surrey County Council’s provision for disabled children, young people and their families. It receives excellent feedback from families and professionals and is rated “Good” by Ofsted under the Children Homes regulations.
Ruth House provides short breaks and full time care to children who predominantly have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Condition.
Ruth House is split into four different living areas and three of these are for the sole use of young people that live with us. There are currently nine young people who live at Ruth House between the ages of 11-18.
Ruth House also offers Short Breaks enabling families to have a break from their caring responsibilities. There is a separate living area designated for this. Ruth House provides overnight and day care. During their short breaks Ruth House offers the children and young people an exciting safe and fun environment in which learn new skills that will enable them to have more life opportunities when they transition to adulthood. These include life skills such as shopping and cooking their own meals, as well as social and communications skills which we develop by accessing leisure activities within the community
Ruth House is expanding its workforce. We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible workers to support some of the most vulnerable young people within Surrey.
Our young people require empathy, patience and positive energy to empower them to develop further life and social skills on their journey to adulthood. While there will be challenging times, the reward of seeing these young people develop into young adults with increased life opportunities, is deeply satisfying.
The key function of the role is to work directly with children and young people. It requires a child centred approach and may involve supporting young people with their personal and intimate care.
The position requires candidates to be able to work shifts which includes weekends and fulltime hours spread over a rolling rota.
This is a challenging and varied role requiring excellent communication skills and a desire to work in partnership with families and a range of professionals.

- Experience of working with disabled children and young people.
- A level 3 diploma in child care (NVQ3) or equivalent is highly desirable for this role.
- An understanding of the social model of disability including and the importance of inclusion and working with diversity.
- Knowledge and understanding of disability in general and of autism spectrum conditions specifically.
- An understanding of relevant legislation to keep children safe
- An understanding of partnership working with families and professionals.
