Salary is in the range: £31,357 to £33,997 (dependent upon qualifications and experience and inclusive of annual allowance)

About the role
We are seeking to recruit a Research Software Engineer to join our growing team. You will be working with the latest data centric and cognitive computing technologies from IBM, as well as our petascale Bull Sequana supercomputer. You will work on a variety of challenging science and engineering projects utilising and enhancing your skills in research software engineering as applied to develop flexible, robust and re-usable digital assets using software optimisation, data analysis, machine learning and natural language processing methods.
- identifying appropriate technologies and designing appropriate technology solutions
- learning and applying HPC, data centric, analytics and cognitive computing technologies
- looking at validation of conclusions, and presentation of results to customers (including advanced visualisation)
- defining work plans for specific Hartree Centre projects
- making site visits to commercial and academic partners
- publishing non-confidential results.
You will join a growing team of world class Research Software Engineers within the Hartree Centre. Working closely with applications teams in SCD, the High Performance Software Engineering and Future Technologies groups in Hartree and with an expanding IBM Research team based at the Daresbury site. You will work with business development personnel to develop collaborations with industrial partners and public agencies.
The Hartree Centre works closely with industrial clients on specific projects and you will also contribute to these projects as needed. Some of the work will be commercial in confidence and subject to IPR rules around public disclosure. The role will involve working closely with teams within commercial companies.
You will be capable, flexible and a fast learner, with a passion for making an impact using technology.
You will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a computing-related discipline and have experience in software engineering using a range of tools and programming languages such as C, C++, Fortran and/or Python.
You will also demonstrate knowledge or experience in at least one of the following:
- parallel Software Development (MPI, OpenMP, etc.)
- accelerator technology (GPU, Xeon Phi, FPGA, etc.)
- machine learning
- user interface/user experience development
- computer visualisation.
Experience in participating in projects across organisations with different partners will be beneficial. This role will also require some travel to other partner sites.
