Relief Support Worker - Hatfield

Posted 4 January by Mencap Ended

Role Description

Would you like to finish work each day knowing you have made a difference?

Are you a person who likes variety?

We are looking for individuals to join our team on a relief basis to support individuals who have a learning disability.

In Hatfield we support 10 people in a supported living service. We also support 10 more individuals in the wider community and we visit them in their own homes in the local town.

The people we support all have different personalities and needs. As a team, we always aim to encourage and enable the people we support to be as independent as much as possible. Everyone we support has a learning disability, however, some also need emotional support due to mental health difficulties. We support people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Personality Disorders and Asperger`s Syndrome. All of them like to be treated with respect and as an individual. It is important that staff are willing to support people in many different ways with a variety of activities to promote each of the people we support with their independence.

The people we support here like staff members that are reliable, good listeners, happy, bubbly and supportive. People like going shopping and having a staff member who can help them select their food shopping and plan a healthy meal plan. We have a cooking club every other Thursday and the people we support like to try new things. A lot of the people we support enjoy days out to the cinema, bowling and playing sport…often enjoying it when they beat the staff!

The people we support have many goals that they would like to work towards. Some have jobs and require support, others would like to work and receive support to do so. One of the people we support is a keen cyclist and likes staff to support them on a bike ride. We have another person we support that has recently achieved a major goal of losing a lot of weight due to Slimming world and is thankful for the support from staff to achieve this goal.

People we support enjoy Arts and Craft, although some of the staff cannot draw, the people here will help them and enjoy an afternoon of colouring, making cards and painting pictures! We are aiding some of the people we support with achieving goals of enhancing maths and English skills. We support people with spelling, reading, maths and counting money to aid their independence and enhance skills.

Carly (Support Worker) says `working at Nine Acres, is the best career choice I have made. I enjoy being here working with my colleague and the people we support. It is an enjoyable and rewarding job!`

If you think that the variety of this role will suit you, we want you on our team. Support is required across mornings, day time and evenings as well as sleep ins (Payment for sleep ins is compliant with National Living Wage), weekends and bank holidays. Come and start your new adventure with us and work the hours that you choose!!!
