Project Manager - Smart Watersides (Up to 24 Month Contract)
£35,284 - £35,500 DOE per annum
The RNLI Innovation Team exists to inspire and inform the RNLI on what is happening in the outside world. What impact do emerging technologies, societal trends and changing ways of working mean for its capability to prevent the loss of life due to drowning? By conducting experiments, design sprints, hacks and technology demonstrators, we enable the organisation to test hypotheses and through technology roadmapping and foresight work, help it envision potential new future scenarios it may one day find itself in. We collaborate heavily with other organisations - commercial, charitable, governmental and international - to share the burden of exploring new territories and maximise the value from our individual innovation endeavours.
You may ask the question whether it is the place of a charity to do this kind of work and you’d be right to do so, but we are not your average charity. It is our duty, our responsibility to explore new ways to increase our efficiency in saving lives. We owe it to our donors and to the people at risk, to ensure we are best placed to help prevent the loss of life wherever we can.
In understanding what the rapidly changing digital world means for lifesaving and prevention, in collaboration with experts from across multiple sectors, we developed a roadmap for a lifesaving digital ecosystem. It is an exciting vision but means nothing if it is to remain trapped in 2D on a page. We are looking for someone to join us to bring it to life.
Specifically, we are looking for someone to work with the Future Lifesaving Innovation Team and to create a Smart Waterside - an IOT enabled environment that gives the RNLI enhanced situational awareness of how people are using our coastline and potentially influence them to behave safely. You’ll also support the delivery of a variety of innovation projects, working in a three monthly sprint cycle, so there will be lots of variety.
We are looking for someone who can work in an open, collaborative way and make a concept truly tangible. You will work with senior stakeholders to capture insights and translate these into design briefs for the development of a portfolio of prototype solutions for a proof of concept demonstrator in Summer 2018. These will then be translated into evidence backed recommendations for scale-up into 2019 and beyond. You must be entrepreneurial, have the ability to act as an intelligent customer in the world of IOT and be well networked. You should inspire others with your vision and excellent communication skills and ensure the human is at the very centre of every aspect of the solution design.
We will set the vision and mentor you on the way, but the right person will have the opportunity to take real ownership of this. It is a great opportunity for someone who wants to be stretched, learn a great deal about a rapidly growing field and help save lives in the process.
To be considered, you’ll need:
- Experience of product and project/programme delivery in a comparable/relevant environment.
- Experience of using insight to help inform and develop ideas and propositions
- Experience of managing supplier relationships, ensuring best practice, relevant and up to date knowledge of marketing developments and best practice
- Experience of projects involving the rapid testing, prototyping and evaluation of products and services
- Knowledge of the concept of 'multi-channel’
Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
