We have a lovely opportunity for an experienced Production Controller to join the Pre-Production team of an established publisher of illustrated non-fiction books. Working closely with designers and editors to deliver a very busy publishing programme, the Production Controller will ensure that books are produced on schedule, within budget and to the correct technical specifications.

The Role:

  • Monitoring the Pre-Production budget and schedule, working closely with your counterpart in Production
  • Liaise with suppliers and within the business for repro and other pre-production services
  • Ensure that both the Creative teams and you, are using appropriate workflow and following company procedures on all titles
  • Utilise a clear negotiation strategy when obtaining pricing and schedules from suppliers ensuring that you benchmark and compare to get the best commercial deal for the company.
  • Run necessary checks on files before they are finalised/archived and other stages as required
  • Co-ordinate and monitor plotter approval process
  • Troubleshooting files and locating missing files/elements of projects
  • Ensure issues are escalated promptly to your Senior Producer as appropriate.
  • Deputise for your Senior Producer when necessary.
  • Input into projects as required.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Process and workflow knowledge
  • Schedule management
  • A good working knowledge of the print and digital production process - image and graphic reproduction
  • Adobe InDesign and production applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional (training will be provided for digital products)
  • Knowledge of Quark

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to work independently and within a team, passionate about books, and able to manage tight schedules within a very busy department.
