Product Specification Writer - Food Manufacturing

Location: Leicestershire

Salary: £25-40,000 + benefits

Ingredients are the foundation of food manufacturers and to support our Client’s Global Specifications harmonisation agenda we are looking for four Specification Writers to manage and ensure their ingredient accuracy whilst harmonising legacy and new systems to make them both compliant and fit for the future. The Specifications Writers will be accountable to verify ingredient specification information. This will include contacting suppliers to gather nutrition and food safety data and correct discrepancies when found. Alongside working with a global manufacturing and R&D team these roles are both complex and in-depth and requires individuals with a strong skill set gained within a large organisation.

The roles:

Interact with suppliers, operations, R&D, Quality etc to request technical information comprised of nutritional, food safety and other significant data.

Upload concise and accurate documents with acquired information to update and maintain the internal specification database whilst also moving data from legacy systems and ensuring a new code of practice is followed

Create external specifications to on-board new suppliers

Work cross-functionally with Quality, Supply and Finance functions

Identify issues and assist with improvement opportunities.

To act as primary contact between NPD, Production and Technical to ensure that all NPD specifications are created accurately and in readiness for launch both for internal and external parties to the highest industry standards and according to deadlines required

Ensure that all specifications are aligned and up to date and submitted and signed off prior to product launch or product modification

Be responsible for all legacy specifications within the assigned category both checking and adapting

Work with NPD to deliver up to date and accurate QAS and ensure these are attached to the relevant specifications

To update and maintain current brand specifications to the required standard

To manage specification specific websites and databases

Support the NPD department with preparing to launch new products

Keep up to date with any changes to legislation or scheme standards and inform the relevant managers on site, capturing any requirements within the specs as appropriate. This will involve regular contact with our customer base ensuring we work to their bespoke requirements

The people:

Have a degree in food science, food technology, nutrition, agriculture, chemistry or other related subjects

Have an associate degree (specified above) with a minimum of two years of experience in food product development, quality assurance, quality assurance, regulatory or quality-related function

Proficient in working with multiple systems and data to generate detailed and accurate records for ingredients

Previous experience in handling relationship with suppliers is preferable

Proactive experience of updating specification database as new documents are completed and old documents expire

Ability to interact with ingredient suppliers and internal functions in a professional manner

Have a passion for food and be interested in a long-term career in the food industry

Competence handling highly confidential information

Experience of working with specification databases

Understanding of scientific principles related to ingredient parameters and test methods

Experience of working within a regulated industry

Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Must have attention to detail, and demonstrated problem solving skills

Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Ability to work independently and prioritize own day-to-day work

To write and update specifications ensuring they are in line with retailer requirements and supporting the NPD department in their day to day activities to prepare new products for launch.

Shows safety awareness and will take a step back to consider the safety aspect before 'diving in’ to complete the task.
