Product Design Engineer

This position is responsible for the design of high-volume injection moulded products. Safety, sustainability, and manufacturability are central to the role. The designer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, covering the full process from concept development and user research through to production and regulatory approval.

The ideal candidate will bring expertise in injection moulding (or relatable processes), expertise with design principles in highly regulated environments, and regulatory compliance, applying these skills to deliver user-centred, sustainable, cost-effective, and manufacturable products.

Product Design Engineer duties & responsibilities

• Design and develop innovative solutions; prototype and test to meet regulatory and user requirements.
• Apply CAD expertise and knowledge of injection moulding to optimise product designs, with a focus on manufacturability and reduced carbon impact.
• Maintain accurate testing reports and present concepts to colleagues and customers throughout the design process.
• Define design and performance requirements based on briefs from stakeholders.
• Manage and maintain documentation required for quality management systems, product development, and change control.
• Identify opportunities to improve existing product designs.
• Research competitor products and market trends to inform unique value propositions.
• Manage multiple projects while ensuring compliance with timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
• Lead assigned projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to drive progress.
• Create and maintain compliant product labelling.

Product Design Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: Apprenticeship/HNC/HND in Product Design or equivalent experience.

• Desirable: BA/BSc in Product/Industrial Design or equivalent.

Experience

• Essential:

  • 5+ years in a product/industrial design or engineering role and preferably 5+ years in injection moulding or similar (open to other industries) product design.

• Desirable:

  • Experience with regulated product design.

  • Experience designing for low-cost, high-volume manufacture.

Knowledge & Skills

• Essential:

  • Proven ability to take products from concept to production.

  • Strong project management and multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.

  • Advanced CAD modelling and document control expertise.

  • In-depth knowledge of Design for Manufacture and Moldflow.

  • Effective collaboration with internal teams, customers, and suppliers.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

• Desirable:

  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor.

  • Knowledge of layout design using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
