Great Prison Custody Officers (PCO’s) are key to the effective running of our prisons and we are looking for people who can fit naturally into this role whether this is from past work experience, existing skills that you can bring to complement the prison or from the ability to learn.
Are you the sort of person that is reliable, treats others with fairness and respect, quick to notice any changes in people you are dealing with and above all have good communication skills, empathy and the integrity and resilience to join our team?
If this sounds like you, you would be joining a team of over 500 employees who make a difference every day at HMP Birmingham.
Working closely with teams across the prison, you'll have a number of key responsibilities that help prisoners reform. First and foremost, you’ll make sure the prison is safe and secure with every prisoner accounted for each day. You’ll also play a key role in giving offenders structure and routine, making sure they get to work in the morning, are actively engaging with the prison regime and secure in their cell in the evening. You’ll be a role model and a leader and encourage prisoners to make positive choices which help them to turn their lives around.
The role is challenging; no two days will be the same, but the job reaps rewards when you can see as a Prison Officer that you have made a real difference to a person’s life. HMP Birmingham is managed by the world’s largest security company so in terms of development into other roles we can support you at every stage of your career.
The Ideal Candidate:
There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ prison custody officer and we encourage applications from people of all backgrounds that can show that they have the integrity, resilience and strong communications skills needed to thrive in these roles.
No specific previous qualifications or experience are required.
Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK, have been a UK resident for five years or more and pass security screening checks.
The Recruitment Process
The recruitment process aims to ensure we get the best candidates into HMP Birmingham and is an opportunity for you to ascertain whether this is the job for you along with meeting key people in our establishment and understanding the role in more depth.
The process covers:
Full completion of the application process
A day of assessment that includes a tour of the prison (subject to availability), demonstrations of Control and Restraint, group activities, scenario setting and mini role-play exercises and a face to face interview.
If successful you would be expected to attend a medical with a nurse on site and be taken through the vetting process.
Successful candidates would then be invited to an intense 9-week training programme which gives you the skills around Health & Safety, Control and Restraint, First Aid, de-escalation techniques and the law. This also incorporates the job training & skills on the landings as part of our shadowing programme. You will be assigned a ‘buddy’ who will support you through your 9-week journey. At the end of the 9 weeks, if you are successful at graduation, you will ‘go live’ as a PCO with a BTEC qualification in Custodial Care. There is also an opportunity to be part of our Apprenticeship Programme.
Our training and operational practices emphasise the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care.
If you join us, you will find a secure, friendly and professional working environment and be given all the support and training and care you will need to succeed.
The first stage of the application process is to apply online.
