Port Agent

Location: Chafford Hundred, Essex

Salary: £18,000 - £20,000 per annum depending on experience

This role will require some out of hours work to cover the requirements of the business

About the company:

Our client provides global strategic maritime, cargo and supply chain solutions to ship owners and operators who span all geographies, market segments, vessels and asset types.

Reporting to the Thames Port Manager, the role holder will be responsible for providing a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-call service to their Principals to ensure the safe and smooth turnaround of all appointed vessels within the jurisdiction of the port office, managing vessel requirements, booking relevant services and undertaking vessel boarding as required.

Duties of the Port Agent:

  • Ensure excellent ships agency services are rendered to all customers
  • Ensure a smooth, quick turnaround of vessels, keeping all relevant parties advised at all times
  • Board vessels as/where required
  • Ensure all items/requirements are promptly ordered/confirmed
  • Liaise with clients and port services on a daily basis
  • Attend regular meetings with ports, terminal and suppliers
  • Ensure all shipping documentation is issued on time and accurately
  • Full utilisation of the Company’s Operating System as per the Standard Operating Procedures
  • Ensure data integrity for all vessel files and record all subsequent information into the internal systems
  • Ensure compliance with LRQA (Lloyds Register Quality Assurance) and/or customer specific standard
  • Ensure all procedural Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) are met
  • Follow internal and external procedures ensuring compliance both with company standards, customer standards and legal requirements
  • Suggest improvements to existing processes and where appropriate create new processes to ensure operational effectiveness

Requirements of the Port Agent:

  • A basic knowledge of Port Operations
  • GCSE Educated or Equivalent
  • Valid driving license
  • Experience of working in a similar role in the shipping/maritime industry
  • Strong communicator both written and verbal
  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict timelines
  • Able to effectively manage own work and work unsupervised 
  • Competent user of the Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Self-motivated and driven individual
  • Team player
  • ICS Qualified (Desirable)
