Your new company
The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is a major UK Government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment. From the food we eat and the air we breathe, to the water we drink, Defra plays a vital role in people's everyday life. We work tirelessly to sustain a thriving rural economy and together we drive the success of our world-leading food and farming industry. Digital Technology is playing a major part in our organisation's evolution and we are in a period of exciting change, embracing Digital Services as a platform for continued transformation. As such, we require a Principal Platform Developer to implement and design digital standards, priorities and strategies across the department, working with Lead Developers to identify and improve internal software development.

Your new role
As a hands-on Principal Developer, you will take an active role in providing authoritative advice to the Head of Development, shaping the future for new strategies and the adoption of new technology. We are passionate adopters of test-driven development and our environment drives continuous deployment so we can rapidly deliver the best value to our users.

The Principal Developer is the most senior technical role within digital development so you will be involved in making high-level decisions from the creation of underpinning technology platforms to the development of critical applications that support key areas of Defra's business. With specialist resource at your fingertips and an opportunity to steer our development strategy, this is a chance to truly revolutionise how people in the UK understand, interact with and manage our natural environment.

What you'll need to succeed
Your background in developing customisations in Microsoft Dynamics using C# .NET and SQL will lead to your success. You will demonstrate strong software engineering capabilities within the full Software Development Lifecycle, with knowledge of building and configuring reporting services that integrate with Microsoft Dynamics. You will be passionate about learning and discovering new solutions and be keen to take full ownership of delivering and designing innovative software.

What you'll get in return
Defra Digital currently operates from a network of hubs in Bristol, Reading, York and Warrington. We envisage the successful candidate will be based from one of these offices with considerable travel around the network as we look to build capacity. Benefits include flexible working arrangements, an onsite restaurant and café, an industry-leading pension scheme, childcare vouchers and a generous holiday entitlement.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
We passionately believe in equality, diversity & inclusion and we match that belief with action. We are committed to being an organisation in which fairness and equality of opportunity is central to the approach in business and working relationships and where the organisational culture reflects and supports these values. In Defra you have the right to a working environment free from discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation regardless of race, ethnic or national origin, age, religion, sex, gender identity, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, working hours, trade union membership or trade union.
