PERSONAL CARE SUPPORT ASSISTANT: HERTFORDSHIRE AND LONDON

I am a 20 year old female student studying a BA Honours in Geography at LSE University. I have an acquired spinal cord injury following a transverse myelitis attack 6 years ago, which means I am partially paralysed and so need help with many aspects of my daily life.

During university terms, I stay in halls of residence at Urbanest Westminster within adapted accommodation and travel to and from the University campus in Holborn. I like to return home to my family near to Hitchin, Hertfordshire on most weekends and during study breaks and holidays. My team of personal care assistants look after me 24/7 to help me live as close to a normal life as is possible. As well as being responsible for my physical well-being and assisting with my exercises and rehabilitation regimes, I also want the assistants to support me in social and other activities. It is important therefore that my assistants have a good sense of humour and an affinity with younger people.

I have to stay in good physical shape and my assistants need to help and motivate me with my regular exercise and rehabilitation regimes using my specialist equipment.

It is important that my assistants are reliable, dependable and take an interest in my care, rehabilitation, academic and social routines. The position is particularly suited to applicants with experience in physiotherapy or nursing.

The position is based between my London locations and my home; good proximity to my home address and access to a car is essential. A mileage rate of 25p per mile would be paid for travel to my home.

This is a full time position offering 40 hours per week, based upon 12 hour shifts 7am to 7pm and vice versa, with rotation between days and nights.

There follows a summary of the principal duties. As my needs vary, it is important that the assistants are flexible around the work involved. Training will be provided by my family and support team.

Personal Needs

Assistance with daily stretches and joint manipulation, Assistance with bathing and showering, Assistance with personal care and toileting, Assistance with dressing and undressing, Putting me to bed and getting me up, Visual inspection of my body for any pressure sores and cuts, Positioning me properly in my wheelchair

Domestic needs

Support with my exercise and physical therapy programme and helping me to develop more sophisticated exercise regimes. Support with studies and written communication, as required. Preparation of meals. Shopping and/or assistance with shopping. Assisting me to move around my home, the University and my residential accommodation, as required.

General Assistance

To enable me to undertake any chosen activity, inside or outside my home or residential accommodation. Assistance with transport arrangements. Assistance with getting to and taking part in social activities.
