A rare and attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Skilled Gardener to work on a three day week basis in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. A three bedroom house is provided within the grounds for the successful applicant. Candidates should hold an academic horticultural qualification (ideally at level 3 or higher) and have extensive gardening experience on private estates.
This beautiful Georgian property in the Chilterns is surrounded by four acres of mature garden; one third of which includes a kitchen garden, although the majority of this area is now surplus to requirement. An additional one acre paddock is located adjacent to the site, and is mown regularly. A hot and cold greenhouse, cut flowers area, fruit trees, fruit cages and small vegetable plots provide small amounts of produce when in season, all of which would benefit from your expertise and assistance. The garden also contains mature yew, beech and mixed hedging, extensive lawn areas, mature trees, herbaceous borders, wall-trained roses, a swimming pool and a dozen chickens. The client is a keen horticulturist and will act as a hands-on Head Gardener in terms of the overall plan, whilst also being strongly receptive to your advice and expertise.
Candidates must be willing to undertake additional duties such as the repairing of fruit cages, fences, filling potholes in the driveway and feeding the chickens etc. where required. The client is abroad for 13 weeks of the year (approximately 2 weeks at a time), during which they require the new employee to take care of their small friendly dog in the provided house as well as the property in general. Dog and cat owners are more than welcome to apply and applicants must be animal friendly; the owner has two cats and a small dog in addition to their 12 chickens. Your responsibility for site security when the client is away during the day/evenings and when abroad, is paramount.
This position would suit an experienced Skilled Gardener or couple looking to settle in a beautiful part of the country on a long-term basis. Applicants should have a positive and friendly character, excellent horticulture knowledge and be physically fit and strong. Applicants will ideally be free to commence employment from the end of March 2018. This is an excellent opportunity to take on a highly attractive employed role whilst allowing a generous amount of spare time to undertake additional work if desired.
