Primary Care Support England (PCSE) provides support services to GP Practices, Pharmacies, Dentists and Opticians.

On 1 September 2015, Capita took on responsibility for delivering NHS England's primary care support service - now called Primary Care Support England (PCSE). Our priority is to continue delivering the services customers receive today, but also introduce new arrangements to help us create national, consistent services for all our users.

The support we offer ranges from key administrative and payment services, to managing supplies, performers list and market entry applications through to moving medical records. We do this and more for GPs, Dentists, Opticians and Pharmacists as well as those working in the teams around them and associated disciplines.

About the role

The Data Manager will Develop and maintain datasets used by PCSE MI and its Stakeholders. Lead best practice around the use of data for MI reporting purposes by PCSE MI Analysts. Resolve data quality issues through robust data investigation and resolution activity. Support wider Business Change management processes (e.g. Transformation and CRM change management)

What you will do

  • The Data Manager role is a senior position.

  • The position holder will work with the wider MI team and senior stakeholders across the PCSE partnership to ensure Data Support meets the level & quality required by the PCSE partnership.

  • Data provisioning to support Operational MI & Reporting is critical as measuring & driving operational efficiency is an ongoing business goal. The Data developer will be able to draw upon their vast experience to identify robust data solutions to common MI reporting challenges.

  • Act as custodian of the Data Warehouse and will contribute to development plans. DWH data needs to be relevant to business needs and of the highest quality; the data manager will be responsible for ensuring that robust data testing & validation processes are in place to achieve this.

  • The Data Manager will be actively involved in sourcing new datasets into the DWH where there is a reporting need or a business requirement to manage. This will involve reviewing source systems to understand how data is captured and therefore how it should be used for MI and analysis purposes.

  • The Data Manager will provide leadership on data issues; including the education and development of less experienced team members.

Essential role related knowledge, technical skills, qualifications and experience


  • Data & Technical expert for SQL Server - expert in the use of SQL programming

  • Experienced in data investigation to identify faults / verify amendments to code

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools

  • Familiar with data presentation packages - e.g. COGNOS / TABLEAU / SSRS

  • Excellent analytical skills (listening, questioning, challenging, modelling, etc)

  • Will thrive in an environment that empowers your team to deliver exceptional results


  • In-depth knowledge of relational database theory / architecture

  • Experience of data / MI change programme - especially in a data / technical capacity

  • Experience of Data Warehouse technologies and how to develop / maintain

  • Familiar with technical challenges in Operational MI reporting


  • Strong communicator - able to engage all levels of stakeholders

  • able to work independently and with a team; requires minimal supervision

  • able to learn quickly; takes responsibility for own learning

  • able to work in a demanding environment and deliver to deadline
