Mechanical Design Manager

We are looking for a experienced Design Manager:-


Supporting the design function, by assisting with the delivery of design packages on all projects, on time and within budget. Uphold company standards at all times and conduct duties in a professional manner. Assist with improving company processes, procedures, standards and policies.


Manage the design process using commercial, contractual, programme / time awareness and technical expertise.

Supporting, understanding and advising other departments / clients as to the requirements and obligations in the development of the design information.

Ensuring the design process recognises the current legislation, standards and codes of practice.

Ensuring design information is of the right quality following company standards and processes.

Production of information maintains pace with project timescales.

Eliminate or reduce health and safety risks in the design.

Eliminate or reduce financial risks during construction process.

Support continuing improvements within the Design Department Documents to facilitate:

Drawing/Document Standards.

Future In House Software Development.

Future In-House System Build.

Operate in accordance with Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental Management Systems and other agreed procedures.

Maintain good relations with internal colleagues, installation and project teams.

Assist in liaising with clients on work related issues.

Support the input of CDM detail within the company’s processes and legislation.

Support in the preparation of HAZOP Studies


Good forward planner and well organised.

Mechanical / Electrical / Design or technical background is not essential but is advantageous.

In-depth knowledge of all aspects of a construction project.

Familiarity with RIBA work stages

Knowledge of software including AutoCad

Understanding of BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Excellent communication and people skills.

Excellent motivational and leadership skills. Work well under pressure.

Ability to present ideas effectively.

Able to evaluate ideas of others.

Attention to detail.

Appreciates each team member's contributions and values each member.

Demonstrates flexibility to daily tasks.

Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications.

A flexible approach to working practices and hours to meet the needs of the role, and a willingness to travel and work away from home.

A good level of attendance, with the willingness to travel to other sites within the UK

A full UK driving licence


BTEC in Building Studies, Building Engineering or Building Management / Building Services.

HNC / HND / Degree in an engineering discipline or Construction Management or Architecture.

Understands the professional development process and set challenging goals to meet them through continuous learning.

Maintain professional Membership/Chartered status of relevant body.

Minimum five years’ experience undertaking similar role.


Communicate key and complex ideas and information effectively, verbally, in writing and in a courteous manner.

Use language and a style of communication that is appropriate to the situation and audience.

Communicate in a persuasive, encouraging and motivating manner.

Communicate expectations for team work and collaboration


Utilise broad experience of coaching, motivating and managing performance to inspire individuals in the Design team to excel in tasks to achieve the desired result. Recognise and acknowledge their contributions. Discuss problems / issues with team members that could impact on results.

Ensure the team is appropriately skilled and resources are efficiently and effectively organised. Be receptive to new ideas; continually review and develop working practices and procedures making effective recommendations for improvement.


Build and maintain internal relationships with colleagues to work effectively as part of a team and have consideration of others’ needs and skills.

Represent the company through positive liaison with clients, their representatives, tenants, external agencies and the company’s colleagues.

Proactively help and support others to achieve team objectives.

Elicit cooperation and support from Senior Management and other departments to develop creative and analytical thinking to deliver the service effectively through promoting continuous improvement.

Defuse any tension which may arise and deal with issues promptly
