Locum Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist

Applications are invited for a full time LOCUM Consultant in Adult Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Intensive.

ABOUT THE TEAM

This is a post for a Locum Consultant with a special interest in Anaesthesia for adults undergoing a wide range of cardiac surgical procedures with the exception of cardiac transplantation. The post includes Consultant cover of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is the eight largest by income in the UK. It is the tertiary referral and teaching centre for a large area of the south of England and the Channel Islands. The Hospital has been a Major Trauma Centre since 2012. It provides services for an extensive range of surgical sub-specialities, with all types of major cancer surgery, including thoracic surgery, and major vascular surgery.

The Trust has almost 50 operating theatres across its sites, and a large theatre extension is under construction, to include 8 new theatres. There is an extensive Anaesthetic pre-assessment service and a developing Peri-operative Medicine service, with Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing.

This post is based in the Wessex Cardiac Centre, at UHS. This is one of the busiest cardiac centres in the UK with some of the lowest mortality rates. The cardiac Anaesthetist team as a group provide all services needed for cardiac patients, including where required anaesthetic supervision of minimally invasive procedures such as TAVI. A sub-group provides paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and anaesthesia for grown up congenital heart disease, and this post is not expected to include this area of work.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

The cardiac ICU has 16 beds currently, and when working normally (currently disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic) – delivers 21 all day cardiac lists per week.
There will be an on call commitment, for cardiac theatres and CICU cover, normally covered by one person at any one time.

Applicants are invited to join a team of 13 Consultants who provide high quality anaesthesia and intensive care. The team is cohesive and well-organised, with full attention to all aspects of governance and safety being overseen by team members.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The successful applicant will provide an equal share across the group of theatre and ICU work

• Full GMC registration.
• FRCA or equivalent and CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent
• Advanced training in cardiac Anaesthesia
• Qualification in t rans-oesophageal echo-cardiography
