Lead Systems Engineer

Deal with day to day activities which relate to the provision and operational support of the systems infrastructure, keeping it secure from internal and external threats. Travelling to POPs in various UK locations where required to undertake work related to the network and systems.


  • Working with the System/Engineering Manager to develop the network and systems;
  • Out of hours support i.e. ensures the POP’s and Systems are accessible 24/7 and provide on-call assistance and monitoring where required;
  • OOH Support;
  • Maintenance of ISP System Backups;
  • User access management to ISP systems;
  • Maintenance of ISP Server Software (updates);
  • Preparation of ISP Systems Servers (new builds);
  • Identification and Replacement of Faulty Hardware;
  • Configuration of ISP System Servers and Services;
  • 24/7 Incident Response & Resolution;
  • Implementation of New Solutions;
  • Active Monitoring of Servers running ISP Services;
  • Research & Development for New Solutions;
  • 2nd / 3rd line support for ISP services, i.e. email, hosting etc.;
  • Manage System/Network Security (Firewalls/ACLs etc.);
  • Reviewing ISP Service Performance Data (Graphing/Logging);
  • Varied Project Work;
  • Training Junior Team Members;
  • Build Area Maintenance;
  • Documentation of New and Existing Processes;
  • Maintain (Increase) ISP System Performance;
  • Constant review of server estate and retirement of legacy solutions;
  • Server/Comms/Build room upkeep and enforcement of general good practice in all areas;
  • Documentation of all systems knowledge and maintained platforms/solutions.

Team Responsibilities

  • Occasionally taking on board responsibility which is not yours i.e. standing in for other team members;
  • If another team member is struggling highlight it to them and your line manager and offer support and help;
  • Being open and not defensive when problems arise;
  • To keep peers/Managers and directors informed of trends and significant problems (both departmental and external) which affect the business;
  • Comply with organisation's information security policies and procedures;
  • Protect company's assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction, or interference;
  • Perform particular security processes or activities as instructed by the company;
  • Report any security risks or potential threats to your Line Manager;
  • To comply with the requirements of the staff handbook, health & safety and quality standards;
  • To improve and update skills through appraisal, taking advantage of appropriate training and self-development;
  • To undertake any additional or alternative duties, when requested, in line with experience, skills and training.

Measurement Criteria

  • The continued operation of the systems infrastructure and the supported services;
  • Timely response and resolution to day to day issues relating to the systems, platforms and services;
  • Effective communication to internal and external customers;
  • Escalation to relevant parties where required;
  • Response to out of hours duties relating to on-call and planned maintenance.

Skills & Background

  • 5 years relevant experience; Linux / Unix
  • Excellent communicator;
  • Good attention to detail;
  • Able to work in both a team environment or on their own;
  • Able to work to tight deadlines;
  • Methodical approach to troubleshooting;
  • Graduate or Equivalent qualifications in the IT field;
  • On-call duties to ensure the continued operation of the network and systems.
