Lead Nurse (Haematology/Oncology) - Thames Valley
Our client is at the forefront of innovative cancer care with their UK network of cancer centres. They provide the most suitable, state-of-the-art cancer treatment and an exceptional level of care to every patient. The centres deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging and the latest in advanced cancer treatments including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and, in the future, proton beam therapy across all centres.
To date, our client has three cancer centres open, two of which currently offer access to proton beam therapy, and a further four new centres planned in the next four years making a total of eight cancer centres around the UK. Their aim is to provide the majority of patients with a state-of-the-art cancer centre within a ninety-minute journey of their front door, wherever they are in the UK.
- Provide overall clinical leadership and operational management to all the clinical areas.
- Lead and implement the centres clinical governance strategy and provide support and input to the centres overall business strategy, consistent with corporate direction.
- Promote a cost effective, patient focused quality service for the continuing success of the cancer centres.
- Provide clear focus on business results, maintaining the balance between quality healthcare delivery and sound financial performance.
- Apply quality improvement approaches and implement findings.
- Deputise for the Centre Manager in their absence.
Main duties and responsibilities
- To ensure understanding of all relevant statutory, regulatory and legal requirements, and that the centre operates within these. This includes being accountable for clinical quality, patient safety and effective risk management.
- To oversee the clinical audit programme for the centre in line with the Corporate Professional Standards Team.
- To ensure clinical policies, corporate and local, are embedded and complied with, within the centre.
- To develop own knowledge and practice, and facilitate continual professional development amongst others.
- Take a lead role in ensuring application of standards and guidelines that underpin a quality learning environment.
- To develop a culture of performance, ownership and accountability throughout the centre to ensure all staff have high levels of engagement and perform to the standards required.
- To work in partnership with the Centre Manager and consultants to achieve the Annual Operating Plan, delivering the centre clinical strategy.
- To act as local lead for ensuring the confidentiality and data protection of patient information is managed within the centre, in line with the Caldicott Guardian Principles.
- To be the lead for Safeguarding within the Centre, liaising with the Corporate Safeguarding Lead in respect of training, awareness and notifications.
- To work as part of the wider centres’ senior leadership team to shape and deliver change.
- Use initiative while working within established procedures and practice to acceptable standards for results.
- Work within a wide range of clinical and professional guidelines.
- Respond appropriately to queries, complaints and adverse events.
- The role may occasionally require an amount of travelling to specifically support the nursing service in any of the cancer centres.
- It is a requirement that the lead nurse will hold the 24hr on-call phone via a rota once they have undertaken the training.
Place of Work
Your normal place of work will be in the cancer centre in Thames Valley however you may/will be required to travel in the course of your duties to attend meetings and other appointments. Travel and reasonable expenses will be paid in line with the Company’s Expenses Policy.
Person Specification - Essential Requirements
Qualifications and Registration
- Evidence of substantial post registration, continual professional development in management and clinically related and relevant subjects.
- Post graduate Master’s Degree or evidence of working towards.
- Registered General Nurse (BN) Qualification.
- Certified Nurse Prescriber or will work towards.
Experience and Competencies
- Competence across a range of clinical, management and leadership skills supported by professional and clinical knowledge acquired through state registration and further education and development.
- Minimum of 5 years Oncology/Chemotherapy Experience (including at least 2 years administration).
- Minimum of 3 years at Band 6 NHS Level or equivalent in Haematology or Oncology.
- Minimum of 5 years post registration experience in relevant field.
- Experience of teaching and assessing staff.
