The Production Services department is responsible for supporting our offices in London, Dublin and Liverpool with users spread across all sites with a resilient DR capacity at a separate site.
Current systems run in both the Microsoft O/S environment and the Unisys Libra mainframe environment(MCP, DMSII and AB Suite)
Within Production Services, The DBA team specifically provides database and server administration, tuning and maintenance, but also other technical duties as required. On the mainframe side, responsibilities are much broader that just data administration and cover many aspects of server administration.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
The priority for the role is to have strong, ‘Senior SME’ level hands-on technical skills related to the Unisys mainframe.
o Ensure the Remedy Incident queue is kept within SLAs and changes are closed on time
o Ensure regular DMSII maintenance jobs are run, including index defragmentation, BCV proving, backup restore tests
o Ensure backups/audit backups are secured for the Mainframe system as per business need with the appropriate retention policies
o Keeping up-to-date with new features/technology developments/industry practices and proposing those that we should consider making use of
o To undertake the daily actions defined on the relevant site checklistQualifications
o To support the road map for the mainframe
o To implement or follow best practice for system administration
o To understand interaction and importance of all systems inside immediate control
o General understanding of all business critical systems
o Liaising with 3rd party suppliers in a professional manner
o To ensure that the technology environment is secure at all times
o Inform immediate management of any risks to our systems as soon as they become apparent
o Ensure the integrity of procedures created within team
o Ensure adequate monitoring of systems and procedures under control of the team to minimise downtime
o To ensure DR capability and over all integrity of the systems that fall under your control
Representing the Team to the business and other senior stakeholders, in the absence of the Team Lead, and or during Priority incidents
o To be able to offer support and lead the team in the absence of the team lead.
Projects And Change
o Carrying out ongoing projects on a day-to-day basis
o Following Change Control documentation procedures and also updating new procedures
o To be able to represent DBA as a stakeholder during project implementation and transition
o Associates will be required to work on a rota for: - early, late and on-call shifts
o Weekend work is also expected
o Thorough Unisys Database Server knowledge of current versions (DMSII)
o Thorough knowledge of DMS tools and administration tasks (such as DBA Tools, reorganisations, etc.)
o Knowledge of replication products and services (e.g. Databridge)
o Good understanding of the MCP Operating System
o Reasonable understanding of Networking
o Basic understanding of the SAN environment (EMC VMAX), geo-clustering, SnapVX, BCV and SRDF
o An understanding of how a helpdesk call should be processed and escalated when necessary
o Good knowledge of Backup, Restore and DR processes/design (using DMS Utility and BCA)
o Good knowledge of performance monitoring, performance analysis and capacity planning using tools such as GPM and Workload Manager
o Understanding of Change Control systems and processes
o Understanding of performance/risk indicators
o Software Certification is desirable but not essential if substituted by over 3 years relevant IT experience.
o Experience working on large and small scale projects
o Exposure to database design (including normalisation/de-normalisation)
o Exposure to design tools (such as Team Foundation Studio)
o Experience of working with off-shore teams
o Cobol, Algol
