Technical Design Authority for elements of the IT Hardware architecture for the core office IT systems, the OSS and the BSS systems within Airwave. (This encompasses Network, Servers, Operating System and Database layers.)
Producing Hardware designs for the implementation of IT programme and project initiatives within Airwave.

Job Description:

• High level Architectural design of the infrastructure aspects of the IT Systems to meet the needs of the Airwave business determining the overall topology and Security Domains of the network and systems.

• Evaluation of the impact on the IT systems arising from new requirements from customer or business opportunities producing cost, time and design impact estimates and statements.

• Working closely with the other members of the IT development and operations teams to contribute to the IT strategy for the evolution of the IT Hardware systems taking account of Developments in the IT industry, the life time of Airwave’s key IT systems and the ongoing development of Airwave’s business and supporting technology.

• Producing requirement specifications for the procurement of Hardware systems for Airwave IT systems.

• Ensuring that Airwave IT security Policies are fulfilled in the IT systems and contributing to the evolution of those policies as Airwave's business grows

• Design of IT hardware to support new requirements from across the Airwave business.

• Review of designs for new developments in Airwave to ensure they align with the IT strategy and determine changes required to the IT systems to enable them to be managed.

• Design of the hardware element of the IT disaster recovery capability of Airwave IT systems to ensure that the Business Continuity plans can be fulfilled. This includes reviewing the designs from other IT projects to ensure that they confirm with the overall design.

• This is a technical specialist role responsible for solving complex technical problems to provide solutions to meet Airwave's business needs. (Examples the Firelink Internet based Soft SMT solution; Virtualisation of the main IT Infrastructure; rationalisation of the use of DNS entries to simplify DR cutover.)

• The role provides fourth line support to the Ops teams when complex faults develop and cannot be resolved through normal diagnostic routines.

• There are numerous short term design packages which are typically a few weeks to a few months.

• Major programmes of work are typically 18 months. Eg the hardware design and implementation of the DR capability encompassed nearly 2 years and had around 60 subordinate systems to be designed.

Key Skills and Experience:

• Educated to a degree level or equivalent
• Formal accredited by CISCO (eg CCDA)
• 3 years proven track record in the design of IT Infrastructure to support a national communications network, preferably Mobile networks
• Experience of capturing and refining complex business and system requirements.
• Experience of establishing cross business and external relationships.
• Experience of system testing.
• Working knowledge of Hardware infrastructure design (Servers, Routers, Switches, Storage Arrays; Authentication Systems; Web Filtering; Firewalls; Proxies, Virtualisation Technologies)
• Working knowledge of IT security requirements. Particular knowledge of government security requirements would be an advantage.
• Sound Understanding of IT technologies including: Unix/Microsoft O/S, Oracle RDBMS, IP network design, Routing protocols, firewall capabilities, HP Product set; Cisco product set.
• Strong Requirements analysis skills Knowledge and familiarity with formal development methodologies and standards including eTOM and ITIL
• Working knowledge of Key business processes, and how they are supported by systems (Fault, Provisioning, Performance Management, Configuration Management, Security) encompassing Service Management, Network Management and business systems.
• Strong Requirements analysis skills.
• Excellent documentation, analysis and presentation skills.

The successful candidate will need to undergo UK security vetting for this position. This will involve:

Completion of a security clearance questionnaire by the candidate
Checking identity documents and employment/education/references/residency in the UK (a minimum of 5 years)
Checks against UK criminal and security records
A credit reference check;
If considered necessary, checks against the criminal and security records of relevant foreign countries.
