Instrumentation and Monitoring Engineer

We are looking for a confident, talented and innovative individual to join our Instrumentation and Monitoring (I+M) Department within our Land Site Characterisation Team based in Wallingford or Consett.

Specifically, as part of the Instrumentation and Monitoring department, you will be involved in projects such as soil instrumentation for construction works involving tunnelling, basements, embankment construction as well as structural instrumentation, both above and below ground, to monitor the movements induced as a result of construction or manmade effects. With the development of the I+ M department, the scope for increased monitoring activities in different areas and with innovative equipment and monitoring techniques will only increase.

You will be responsible for delivering the site elements of our Instrumentation and Monitoring works at all stages of our projects. Specifically, this includes regularly communicating site progress / issues to all involved parties, providing training and tasks to I+M Technicians and engineers and providing technical / logistical support where necessary, administering key documents regarding instrumentation installation and monitoring set up.

You will produce all QHSSE Documentation including (but not limited to) detailed method statements, standard operating procedures, risk assessments and quality plans. You will also ensure that you are familiar with the method of operation of all instruments and systems of data acquisition.

You will work closely with our in-house drilling teams, suppliers and sub-contractors to enable supply and delivery of our work, this will also include delivering inductions, briefings and toolbox talks as appropriate.

You will deliver the installation of our monitoring systems and solve any problems with instrumentation and set out on-site installations or check those that have been set out by other technicians. Where required, you will attend sites to solve any technical issues or undertake routine inspection of our instrumentation systems.

You will be committed, proactive and decisive with a passion for delivering projects safely, on budget and on time.

In addition, as an industry specialist, you will perform data calculation on raw data and assist the engineering department with report preparation; you will also analyse and review data from instrumentation using proprietary monitoring software.

Successful applicants will have:

  • A degree in Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering or specialised engineering degree with data acquisition, electrical or instrumentation bias.
  • Previous experience within the ground engineering, geotechnical or structural monitoring profession or similar industry preferred
  • Sound knowledge of data acquisition systems and programming of data loggers
  • Demonstrable experience of project management in a similar environment, excellent time management communication and analytical skills and experience of successfully leading a small team
  • Proficiency with relevant computer applications (Microsoft Office and industry specific software)
