IT Infrastructure Engineer (Level 2)

Main Purpose of the Job

The IT Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the security, capacity, and availability of all data centre and corporate IT infrastructure such as hypervisors, servers, storage, network switches, as well as core services such as Internet access, remote access, email, file/print and telephony. Success is measured by performance and availability of systems and high customer satisfaction.

Position within the Organisation

Reports to the IT Infrastructure Manager.

What will you be doing?

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Recommending opportunities to improve, through problem resolution, automation or other means;

  • Ensure that infrastructure and core services are available during agreed operating hours;

  • Ensure that data and systems are backed up and can be recovered, even in a disaster;

  • Ensuring that all IT infrastructure assets are managed, in policy and secure

  • Resolving incidents, and completing job related activity as necessary, in and out of hours, exempt from overtime;

  • Continuous service improvement

  • Provide technical delivery resources to projects;

Specific responsibilities:

  • Supporting, monitoring, and reporting, the security, capacity, and availability of all data centre and corporate IT infrastructure;

  • Maintaining, the security, capacity, and availability of all data centre and corporate IT infrastructure;

  • Creation and maintenance of IT infrastructure processes, and documentation

  • Minimising the impact of changes to operations through robust change management;

  • Supporting 3rd party maintainers and providers in fault resolution and analysis

Experience:

  • Two to five years' experience in a similar Infrastructure role; meeting most, if not all, capability requirements;

  • Good technical grounding in all aspects of infrastructure;

  • Good understanding of IT infrastructure technologies;

Success criteria:

  • "IT just works";

  • A "one team" approach for IT Service Delivery;

  • Shift-left - colleagues in the IT Service Desk and/or the wider business are as self-sufficient as possible;

  • SLA is met and policies are complied with;

  • IT systems and data are secure and can be restored in the event of a major disaster;

  • Waste (i.e. obsolete/under-utilised IT services) is minimised;

  • Customer satisfaction in IT service delivery increases;

Key Interfaces

Internally, these will be with the whole of IT and in particular the Service Delivery Team, as well as colleagues as required. Externally this will be current or potential suppliers. Travel will be required from time-to-time.
