Purpose of the job role:

To provide a high quality assessment service for households in temporary accommodation who have breached the terms of their tenancy.

To ensure excellent customer service, providing clear and detailed information for customers.

Duties and responsibilities

Carry a case load of clients, threatened with eviction from temporary accommodation.

Advising people threatened with homelessness from temporary accommodation.

Carry a caseload of clients threatened with homelessness from temporary accommodation, assessing each case individually and issuing decisions on these in line with service standards.

Understand and promote a broad range of housing options via a Personal Housing Plan which enables customers to take responsibility and make decisions

Carry out and determine homeless assessments - homelessness, local connection and eligibility

Carry out and determine homelessness assessments - priority need

Carry out and determine homeless assessments - intentionality

Assess and determine requests for interim accommodation pending review and appeal.

Conduct interviews and assessments at various external locations including client’s homes, partner agency offices, community centres as required.

Maintain customer’s records and detailed information relating to each case, and record actions taken using Haringey’s data storage and management systems

Prepare written assessments and detailed outcome letters as part of ongoing case work and referral

Prepare statistics and data analysis to demonstrate your own performance and outputs.

Wider team & partners

Work collaboratively across Homes for Haringey and with other stakeholders to maximise availability of suitable units of accommodation

Engage with partners to maximise for homeless prevention.

Know how to find information about accommodation options and be able to brief customers on these

Have a good working knowledge of available accommodation provision

Have a good, current working knowledge of relevant agencies and make referrals to these where appropriate

Signpost customers to appropriate external sources of advice and support.

Refer customers to other relevant agencies where appropriate.

Actively engage with the community to promote and develop understanding of Homes for Haringey’s approach to housing need.

Represent Homes for Haringey with stakeholders, solicitors, contractors etc.

Aware of local housing policy and legislation as it affects the remit of this post

Understand and implement local housing policy and legislation as it affects the remit of this post

Maintain a good understanding of local housing policy

Maintain a sound working knowledge of relevant housing legislation appropriate to this area.

Keep abreast of changes in policy and legislation and use these to aid service improvement for example- sharing knowledge to the organisation via briefings and training.

Education(or equivalent experience)

  • A good general standard of education, numeracy and literacy.
  • A responsible position delivering a housing or housing related service

Knowledge

  • An understanding of public policy issues affecting temporary accommodation, homelessness prevention, social housing and safeguarding.
  • Knowledge of Landlord and Tenant legislation and best practice,
  • A sound knowledge of homelessness legislation and best practice supported by practical experience.
  • Good knowledge of Housing options in the local area.
  • A good understanding of Housing and welfare Benefits.

Skills

  • Good IT skills
  • A good understanding of the way in which the work of the team supports the delivery of value for money.
  • Ability to solve problems - to be flexible and adaptable and able to respond to situations creatively as they arise.
  • Good listening and communication (people) skills - to interact, liaise and negotiate effectively with stakeholders with a wide range of needs, including vulnerable people, technical staff and local partners.
  • Ability and willingness to make a positive contribution to team culture and to inspire and gain the confidence of others
