Homelessness Housing Officer

We currently have a requirement for 2x Housing Officers in Leicester, this will be on a contracting basis initially until the end of May with the review to extend. 

To prevent homelessness in the City by assisting customers retain present accommodation, and ensuring access to suitable housing for those in need.

To fully inform customer of the housing options available to them, and assist customer with a range of housing matters
To take a proactive approach to the prevention of homelessness
To ensure fair and consistent treatment of private sector and RSL tenants
To ensure that landlords and agents comply with relevant legislation
To ensure provision of accommodation, furniture and other support to homeless people
To support the development of new housing initiatives that meets these objectives

Assists the Team Leader in staff training, service development and service provision in at least one specialism in the Section
Provides front line services to customers through the contact centre, face-to-face and written correspondence including investigating and responding to Councillor and MP enquiries, home visits and access and health assessments
Investigates, assesses and advises clients on options open to them to retain existing accommodation or secure suitable re-housing
Assists clients to retain or secure accommodation by representation and advocacy.
Investigates and determines homelessness declarations and provides assistance to persons making declarations in accordance with the law
Maintains comprehensive awareness of the law and good practice and its application to the work of the Section
Undertakes assessments of applications for priority re-housing, including Persons From Abroad applications
Participates in routine partnership working with internal and external stakeholders including attendance at meetings as designated by the Team Leader
Provides advice and guidance to less experienced members of staff
Undertakes a range of work related to the private rented sector e.g. validation of notice, illegal evictions, defending possession proceedings and rent increases

Academic qualification or work experience of one of the following areas: Homelessness, tenancy relations, housing advice, housing management, welfare benefits, housing allocations, or other housing, legal or welfare issue
At least one years experience of interviewing and advising members of the public

Must be able to recognise discrimination in its many forms and willing to put the Council's Equality Policies into practice
Awareness of the housing needs of disadvantaged groups
Ability to work under pressure and deal sensitively with customers in stressful situations. Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
Experience of inputting data and producing reports and correspondence on a PC.
Negotiation skills
Care and innovative approach to problem solving
Regular Saturday work and willing to do home visits
Must satisfy relevant pre-employment checks, e.g. Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure, membership of the Vetting & Barring Scheme
