Head of Technical Services Director (Engineering sector)

Our client is a market leading SME manufacturer and supplier of high quality hardware products.

They are seeking a Head of Technical Services to manage the implementation of an effective Technical Services unit within the existing business. This is a business process re-engineering project with the objective of delivering effective management, control and direction of the engineering, technical support and quality teams in support of the business objectives and with the primary function of supporting the process of making and selling new and better products.

This person will be a strategic thinker capable of challenging established thinking and have the ability to take responsibility and be accountable. They will be able to work under pressure and will be self motivated with the ability to act remotely of the support team. A team player with ability to manage and lead teams.

Main duties:

  • Responsible for implementation of effective processes to support a commercially focussed engineering strategy for new and existing products and processes;
  • Responsible for ensuring the technical and engineering teams are unified into one effective team to deliver required support through capability, direction and resource;
  • Responsible for ensuring the delivery to market of new products and that capital investment projects meet strategic requirements;
  • Responsible for primary capital investment in equipment and tooling;
  • Responsible for ensuring defined quality standards are met and adhered to and that quality management system is effectively functioning in all areas of the company;
  • Responsible for training and development of all Engineering and Technical staff and for ensuring regular performance reviews are carried out for all Engineering and Technical Staff;
  • Contribute to strategy formulation with the board and with the business’s management team;
  • As a customer focussed organisation all employees are expected to acquire basic product knowledge and take responsibility for providing effective front-line customer support by answering telephone calls when required.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant Business NVQ4/Degree or equivalent/relevant qualification;
  • Technical or Engineering qualification or equivalent experience
  • Sound understanding of business processes and project management in order to deliver objective on time and to budget;
  • Strong commercial understanding of the role of technical and engineering functions;
  • Proven track record of technical specification and development of new products;
  • Sound knowledge of design principles for engineered products;
  • Sound knowledge of processes involved in producing engineered products;
  • Sound knowledge of systems principles, including hydraulic, pneumatic, plc control, tooling, forming;
  • Solid understanding of producing products to conform to technical standards and experience of CE and ANSI approval processes
  • Proven experience of quality management systems & processes;
  • Experience of managing and working to business & personal performance targets;
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both internally and externally;
  • Excellent IT proficiency with the ability to use IT presentation and communications to maximise business advantage;
  • Good analytical skills and ability to interpret statistics;
  • Knowledge and experience of production engineering improvement processes
  • Knowledge of sheet metalwork and power press tooling

You will have a clean, full UK driving licence and be able to travel on company business both nationally and internationally
Flexibility - Full time flexible working
Salary - up to £65K
Location - Hertfordshire
