Head of Sports and Activities

The Head of Sports and Activities key responsibility is the implementation, smooth running, administration and ultimately successful delivery of all aspects of the Summer School Recreational Programme (day time activities, evening entertainment and excursions). The role is a Senior Management position therefore the HSA is expected to fulfil a demanding workload.

Reports to:Centre Director (CD) and Operations Executive (OE).

Location:16 centres across the UK.

Managing:Activity Leaders & International students.


  • Up to 48 hours per week, on average.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Some weeks you may be required to work in excess of 48 hours. You will therefore be asked to 'opt out’ of the 48-hour Working Time Directive.

Contract and remuneration:

  • 4 week contract with a potential extension.
  • Full board and accommodation provided free of charge.

Ardmore requirements for all employees

  • Eligible to live and work in the UK and 18 or over.
  • Have a suitable police check/ enhanced DBS(Ardmore can assist with this).
  • High level of professional conduct and smart appearance.
  • Commitment to safeguarding students at all times.
  • Follow all Ardmore Procedures and policies as outlined in the Staff Handbook.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficient in English language.

Role Specific Specification


  • Ability to lead fun and engaging activities whether sports/ arts & crafts or alternative) for a group of students.
  • Previous experience working with children/ teenagers and in a team.
  • Flexible approach to the working day and ability to 'think on your feet’.
  • Ability to create and sustain working relationships with children key clients.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Enthusiasm and ability to motivate a team of activity staff and students.


  • Experience of organising an activity programme and/or events programme.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Hold a valid First Aid Certificate, Lifeguard or sports coaching qualification.
  • Have experience of working with students ages 9 - 17.
  • Experience of managing teams in summer school environment.

Job tasks:

Activities and Excursions

  • Create and Implement a high-quality activity and excursion programme, ensuring that all staff are prepared and present for activity sessions.
  • Manage, train and regularly observe all activity staff, completing appraisals and performance reviews at the end of their contracts.
  • Lead daily team meetings with all activity staff to get feedback on activity sessions and excursion programmes, and to find out whether there are any concerns about any students.
  • Maintaining administrative records (attendance, rotas, incidents, excursions, regularly updated risk assessments and programmes).
  • Use customer feedback to develop new ideas and ensure that high standards are being met for both activities and excursions.
  • Ensure all activities are advertised and promoted and that notice boards and posters are updated and presentable.
  • Attend Centre Management and Group Leader meetings as necessary.
  • Liaise with the CD on the stock of activity material, centre-hired items and the return of all unused stock.
  • Assist the CD to set up and close the centre and assist with the day-to-day running of the centre.
  • Liaise with college staff to ensure facilities are booked and ready.

Training and Induction

  • Complete Ardmore Online Training prior to centre arrival.
  • Attend Management Training.
  • Attend all staff briefings and workshops.
  • Lead the Induction Day for (S)ALs, perform observations & appraisals.
  • Attend and respond positively to appraisal from CD.
  • Actively seek further training if needed.

Student Welfare

  • Make sure that all students are involved in the various activities and excursions, paying special attention to the individual students.
  • Alongside the senior team, implement feedback points raised by GLs and students.
  • Work closely with the management team to respond to, monitor and report and issues or concerns raised by staff, students or otherwise.
  • Ensure the programme is delivered safely and to a high standard.
  • Create a positive atmosphere and motivate effectively.
  • Regularly review and revise Risk Assessments.
  • Carry out residential duties on a rota basis, including meal supervision, lights out duties, room checks and additional duties as required.
  • Maintain proper levels of student behaviour, safety and welfare and respond to emergencies at all times.
