Experian are currently recruiting for Head of Software Development, this role is part of the UK&I Solutions Team, responsible for the build, maintenance & decommission lifecycle of products and data services to support our business partners across UK&I. Working in a challenging, matrix organisation promoting partnership working and cultivating strong relationships with Executives and business leaders to ensure deliverables support business strategy and customer requirements.

The role is a senior position and is responsible for the development of software solutions. The 3 core elements of the role are as follows

  • Leadership - ensuring 'best practice' is implemented across the Software Development Lifecycle and building and maintaining technical capability to deliver required solutions
  • Delivery - excellent track record of delivery, within the full life cycle of software development/portfolio management
  • Stakeholder management - work in collaboration with key stakeholders to manage the priorities of the business, across a diverse business with competing demand

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

For Software Development, develop and execute long-term strategies and shorter-term technical plans to meet aggressive time to market of innovative solutions to support the business. Provide leadership and management oversight to software and systems professionals. Be results-driven, customer-focused, technologically savvy and skilled at building internal relationships and external partnerships in a global and highly matrixed environment. Be accountable for the success of the team and act as an escalation point. Report out to stakeholder's periodic status, KPIs, financials, progress, and resources levels, etc.


  • Working in collaboration with the business, develop innovative solutions and enhance current solutions in line with agreed Architecture blue-print
  • Act as a role model for emerging talent to follow creating a culture of personal development
  • Coach/Mentor high performers who are listed in the succession plan
  • Initiate and sponsor department and global initiatives that add value to the organisation
  • Manage Team Performance in line with agreed company processes, ensuring everyone has a career path and personal objectives to enhance capability
  • Select, develop, manage and motivate the development of staff to ensure optimal productivity
  • Actively work to ensure that 'Security First' is embedded in the team's culture and ripples through the software development lifecycle
  • Act as a leader within the Solutions Team demonstrating integrity, respect, fairness and professionalism in all you do


  • Ensure accurate Demand Forecasting and Capacity Management is in place with an effective sourcing model, to support the business pipeline
  • Manage the pipeline of projects for the business to successful delivery, to time, cost and quality with an ethic of continuous improvements, working closely with all key relationships
  • Ensure that effective Source Code Management is in operation and understood by the development function
  • Ensure appropriate tooling and best practice is effective across the SDLC
  • Ensure software development is in line with the agreed architecture policies and guidelines
  • Report out to stakeholder's periodic status, KPIs, financials, progress, and resource levels, etc against the agreed Programmes of Work
  • Act as 'Acceptance' Gatekeeper for Global and Third Party solutions, ensuring 'fit for purpose' for the UK&I business
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure quality and cost effective solutions are developed.

Stakeholder Management

  • Ensure close collaboration with Finance Partners to accurately manage forecasts and budgets in line with company policies and processes
  • Produce timely and accurate information to Solution sponsors about their pipeline of activities
  • Keep Senior Exec up to date with issues and risks across the Software Development function and provide recommendations and plans to remediate
  • Be creative in terms of resources and cost when addressing business opportunities and provide effective consultancy to help guide key decisions by the business


  • Degree/Masters in either business and/ or information technology base


  • Proven track record in operating and delivering results in a highly complex and matrix organization developing software solutions
  • Ability to inspire and lead the team who will strive to deliver excellence for our customers
  • A demonstrable track record of implementing tools across the SDLC and keeps abreast of emerging technologies which can be exploited for business advantage in the development of innovative solutions.
  • A proven track record of implementing a DevOps culture to drive optimum time to market of innovative solutions.
  • Experience developing and delivering commercial multi-tiered programmes ensuring programme processes are followed from inception to close
  • Experience with operating in a high security, data intensive, data centric "big data" and analytics environment
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically to support key commercial business decisions and objectives
  • Credibility and gravitas to influence and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders across functional lines
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with Marketing and Product Sales, Operations, IT, HR, Finance and Compliance organisations
  • Proven success growing a business with prudent cost increases as well as cost reductions in support of contracting business conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage resources effectively including reorganisations
  • Excellent knowledge of overall business management principles
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Knowledge of multiple computing platforms and platform specific tools
