Head of Chemistry

Closing Date: Tuesday 17th April 2018, 12 Noon
Job Start: September 2018
Salary: Academy Leader Scale, AL4-AL8: £49,919-£54,331, Inner London
Contract type: Full Time
Contract term: Permanent

We are looking for a motivated and inspiring Head of Chemistry to join our school team in September 2018. You will work closely with the Head of Science to provide consistently high quality Chemistry teaching across the school.

We are committed to developing teachers; applications are welcomed from both aspiring and experienced leaders.

Science is an extremely popular subject with the pupils at Stratford School Academy, with almost a third of pupils selecting Separate Sciences as an option. Pupils enjoy their Science lessons and understand the opportunities that achieving well in Science can offer.

There are lots of jobs for science out there, so why choose this one? Because at Stratford School Academy you will either be a Chemistry Teacher or a Physics Teacher and not a general Science teacher. We believe that strong subject knowledge underpins good teaching of the sciences and accordingly Chemists, Physicists and Biologists are best placed to teach excellent lessons in their respective disciplines.

Our aim therefore is for all pupils to be taught each science specialism by a subject specialist to ensure that they are taught concepts with a solid foundation to allow them to achieve academic success. We are rolling through a program just as fast as we can to see each science is taught by subject specialists and currently years 10 and 11 are taught by purely specialists and all schemes of work and lessons for years 7, 8 and 9 are planned by a subject specialist to allow for a strong pedagogical delivery of the content. Over the next 2 years as we expand as a school and are able to balance up the science teaching team, we will extend subject specialist teaching into all years.

Between 2014 and 2016 Stratford School Academy was rebuilt through the Government's Priority School Building Programme. We now have two brand new buildings each for 750 pupils. In September 2015 we admitted our first 300 strong Year 7 cohort and we will grow to 1500 pupils by 2020. We have not gone for the usual Upper/Lower School split but instead operate two 'mini schools' educating pupils from Year 7 to 11. Our mini school in Upton Lane incorporates a Resource Provision for up to twenty children with Autism; our mini school in Grosvenor Road will develop a complementary specialism in teaching pupils with Speech, Language and Communication needs.

We try to look after our staff. We provide travel loans and run cycle to work, parking permit and childcare voucher schemes. All staff get priority admission to the school for their children. Teachers have lower than average teaching loads and we don't expect them to do cover -so you have time to do the job properly. Our school dinners are well worth eating and you get free coffee all day made by a qualified barista. Last but not least you get to work with very nice people and pupils.
