The person in this role will be responsible for supporting the Group Finance team, primarily being the group accounting team but additionally assisting treasury and tax teams where necessary.

Accounting responsibilities will include assistance with the preparation of the Group year end and interim financial statements, management of the audit process, and to provide ad-hoc technical accounting guidance to the finance team. 

Other responsibilities will be the preparation of technical accounting papers, and ownership of specific accounting areas such as Share Based Payments or Financial Instruments.


Scope of Role

The job holder will support the Head of Group Finance and the Group Finance team.  They must be a self-starter and capable of juggling competing priorities.

Key deliverables, such as the financial statements, will be prepared for external audiences as well as being presented to senior stakeholders such as the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Pret’s Private Equity owners, Bridgepoint.

The job holder requires strong attention to detail, investigative skills and the ability to work across teams in the finance department.  Experience dealing with complex technical accounting areas is a must, and a willingness to stay ahead of new accounting developments is key.

The demands of the role will change significantly throughout the year, being responsible for managing the audit process while auditors are on site. Outside of this, the job holder will be involved in Group Finance projects, such as the implementation and improvement of finance systems, and the implementation of new accounting standards (IFRS 15, IFRS 16).

The scope of the role is wide and is therefore expected to provide substantial scope for development and increased responsibility over time. 

Core Responsibilities

Financial Statement Preparation
  • Assist with the preparation of the financial statements for all Group Companies, including primary statements, and supporting notes

  • Take end to end ownership of specific sections of the Financial statements

Accounting Policy
  • Be the technical point of contact on specific accounting areas and take end to end ownership of those areas, including some of Share Based Payments, Lease Accounting, Earnings per share, Derivatives

  • Provide technical accounting guidance to the finance department

  • Manage Pret’s accounting policy manual, including recurring updates to the manual

  • Stay on top of the latest developments in reporting compliance and accounting standards.

  • Undertake reviews of international compliance with accounting policy

Audit Management
  • Be primary point of contact for external audit team, internal audit teams and consultants

  • Co-ordinate preparation of information for internal and external audit

  • Manage planning and deliverables for Audit Committee

Controls and Compliance
  • Maintain the UK and international control environment through review of finance team input and preparation of control schedules

  • Perform local and international internal audits to ensure financial processes and controls are effective in design and have been implemented correctly

Group Accounting and consolidation
  • Assist with the group consolidation including the preparation of elimination entries and consolidation adjustments

  • Assist with the preparation of group accounting entries, including holding company accounting

    Additional Responsibilities

    • To assist the Tax Manager through annual compliance cycles including corporation tax returns, capital allowances and other projects

    • Assistance with the preparation of information for statutory surveys

    • Attendance at technical update sessions (finance, accounting, taxation, treasury)

    • Ad hoc project work as necessary.

    • To attend the required number of Buddy Days in a designated shop.
